The former residence of the Emperor

Imperial Palace & Teramachi

The Kyoto Imperial Palace was home to a succession of emperors over more than 500 years. It is surrounded by a vast park full of greenery that covers an area of 650,000 square meters. The districts of the city were laid …moreout in 794 when the seat of government was moved to Kyoto, and their traces are preserved today in the grid-like layout of the streets of Kyoto. As Kyoto Imperial Palace is located at almost the exact center, the Imperial Garden surrounding it is a favorite place for relaxation among citizens who visit all throughout the year.
In the Teramachi area to the east of the Imperial Palace, there are many long-standing shops selling choice Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese tea and sweets. For example, the famous green tea merchant Ippodo was founded in 1717, while the Japanese paper goods and stationery specialist Kyukyodo was founded in 1663, making them truly veterans among veterans.
