Enjoy a cup of tea at Au Temps Perdu while you look at the people walk by and listen to the murmur of the river
There is no better place to take a break close to Heian Shrine than the terrace of Au Temps Perdu; the atmosphere here is French, but you can still see the giant vermillion torii gate of Heian Shrine, plus the food and desserts here are just great, making this the ideal place to relax. They also have a nice selection of tea, some of them such that you can only have them in Japan. Plus, of course, their cakes are also really pretty, so this place is great for afternoon tea. The feeling at their terrace is also nice and leisurely, so if you are looking for a place to contemplate the deeper things in life, this should be your first choice in the Okazaki area of Kyoto.

Lunch set / ¥1,800
This lunch set is best had on the terrace seating, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the river and the huge torii gate of Heian Shrine in the distance. The quiche is especially good; it has a soft texture, and the filling is just so creamy. You get a soup and a drink with this lunch set so it’s actually pretty good value.

The cakes at this French restaurant look absolutely beautiful and also taste great. It is not every day in Kyoto you can find cakes that have such a refined taste. Drinking coffee while you watch the people going by and enjoy your cake is something that makes you almost feel like you were in France. And not to forget their coffee; although they are famous for tea, their coffee is also really good.

Darjeeling First Flush / ¥800
The first flush is the very first plucking of the harvest season, in other words, the best of the best in the tea world. The floral scent of the tea is sure to make you feel satisfied that you came to Kyoto.
Aubepine

Aubepine / ¥800
This tea is made using hawthorn herb, and this café is one of the only places in Japan where you can enjoy a cup of aubepine tea.

Au Temps Perdu offers French food for almost reasonable prices, especially during lunch, when their lunch menu goes for 1800 yen. The tastes are all bold and somewhat adventurous, especially for Kyoto. They have seats outside which is something not that common in Japan, and which for me raises my rating of this restaurant half a point.

This French restaurant is right by Heian Shrine. Even though the restaurant offers French food, it is casual and spacious making you feel welcome. I want to especially recommend the terrace by the Shirawaka River. Their signature dish is their famous quiche, which with its crunchy crust tastes really delicious. Many people come to this restaurant just to have their quiche. They also have a good selection of cakes, so if you are around Heian Shrine please come taste them!
