Crafty Café for Cultural Exchange in Nishijin district
CAFÉ FROSCH is a café created by two sisters in order to bring cultural exchange in a historical area of Nishijin. An area full of arts and crafts, especially textile, Nishijin is a wonderful location to learn about kimono and other crafts. People from all around the world visit the café thanks to a wonderful atmosphere they provide. Events such as “English Night”, live music, and workshops are often being held. The younger of the two sisters have always excelled in hand crafts that it transformed well into cooking. The bread is made starting from making the yeast from “Koji” the same ingredient used to ferment soy sauce and miso. Be ready to exchange cultures and experience the art of hand creations.
Koji pan plate / ￥980
The pure taste of flour and yeast is all that’s required for great tasting bread. They use raw “koji” from a long-standing specialty store in Kyoto to make their own yeast. On the Koji pan plate, you will also find a seasonal main dish, salad, homemade pickles and cream cheese for two types of Koji bread. This seasonal main dish is beef tendons braised in red wine and homemade miso.
Buta no kakuni don (Braised pork rice bowl) / ￥900
A new item to the menu! This bowl contains pieces of pork braised until melty tender topped with egg and scallions on bed of rice. It comes with miso soup and vegies on the side. Add some Yuzu Kosho (Yuzu pepper) and mustard according to your taste.
Add a mini dessert / ￥200
Desserts items change seasonally so do ask what the day’s dessert is. This time, the choices were Bitter gato au chocolat cake or moist banana bread. Bitter gato au chocolat is moist and very chocolaty a lovely dessert for all chocolate lovers!
English night on Wednesdays from 7pm - 9pm / ￥1,000 or ￥1,500
Every Wednesday, an event called English night is held. The cost to join is ￥1,000 (includes a drink) or ￥1,500 (includes food and drink). It’s a wonderful event to meet people regardless of nationality or age. English speaking staff joins the event as well as others from Japanese locals to exchange students. It’s an international environment that you can enjoy over some food and drink.
