Have some rich matcha sweets at the off the beaten path café of Chasen at JR Kyoto Isetan department store’s 10th floor
This café that boasts a great selection of rich matcha desserts is in the unlikely location of Kyoto Ramen Koji on the 10th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan department store. It’s hard to think there would be a café where you can relax among all these ramen restaurants. This is truly an off the beaten path café. The concept of Chasen is to offer sweets that are “Cool, hot, and melting.” They have some sweets that offer a completely new sensation to you, like their freshly baked crispy apple pies topped with cold matcha ice cream. Of course they only use genuine Uji matcha. Here you can taste the unique, rich flavor of matcha. In 2016 they opened again after renovations, and they now have spacious counter seating from where you can see through the window all of Kyoto, and their seating area is now more spacious. Most of the restaurants and cafes around Kyoto station are crowded so there are not many cafes where you can relax. This café is my recommendation.
Matcha ice cream and jelly

Matcha ice cream and jelly / ¥626
This matcha ice cream and jelly dessert is a popular item on the menu, and it has been on the menu since before the renovations. The fresh and juicy matcha jelly and matcha ice cream taste simple, but you can still feel the rich taste of matcha in them, and the taste is addicting. I recommend eating the matcha with the sweet red beans, this way the taste is even better. The slightly warm white rice flour dumplings and the plump, stewed black beans make this charming dessert something you have to try at least once.
Kinako ice cream

Kinako ice cream / ¥410
On top of a kinako, or roasted soybean flour, there is more kinako, so this dish can be said to be a great kinako extravaganza. The rich taste of kinako can be tasted in the soft ice cream and it’s really delicious. How about eating this as dessert?
Matcha latte
3Let's Try!
Matcha latte / ¥518
The sweetness of the steamed milk combined with the bitterness of the matcha tea makes this matcha latte have just the right amount of sweetness. Since matcha is both sweet and bitter, this latte goes well with other desserts too, and you won’t feel like the desserts are too sweet. Have a cup of matcha latte as your afternoon tea!

This restaurant/cafe offering matcha is located in the unlikely place of the ramen floor of Isetan department store, and they offer some unlike things, besides the normal matcha parfaits and pancakes they also offer pasta, even matcha pasta! If you get the window seat you can view the whole of Kyoto below you while you have your afternoon tea. If you get tired of shopping, how about a break here?

This small café is on the 10th floor of the JR Isetan department store, and it offers both cold and hot sweets and food. Their counter seats are by a big window so you can enjoy some great, delicious sweets while you take in the views!
