Kyoto Station Matcha/Green TeaDec. 03, 2015 UPDATE
Have some rich matcha sweets at the off the beaten path café of Chasen at JR Kyoto Isetan department store’s 10th floor

/ 茶筅
This café that boasts a great selection of rich matcha desserts is in the unlikely location of Kyoto Ramen Koji on the 10th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan department store. It’s hard to think there would be a café where you can relax among all these ramen restaurants. This is truly an off the beaten path café.

The concept of Chasen is to offer sweets that are “Cool, hot, and melting.” They have some sweets that offer a completely new sensation to you, like their freshly baked crispy appl...moree pies topped with cold matcha ice cream. Of course they only use genuine Uji matcha. Here you can taste the unique, rich flavor of matcha.

In 2016 they opened again after renovations, and they now have spacious counter seating from where you can see through the window all of Kyoto, and their seating area is now more spacious. Most of the restaurants and cafes around Kyoto station are crowded so there are not many cafes where you can relax. This café is my recommendation.

Kinako soft cream is the best ever for me. I did not have opportunity to have Kinako once a year so far, however I would go there to have it frequently, in spite of cold season like a winter.
We highly recommend that you visit this shop after having lunch around Kyoto station or between your sightseeing as it is located in JR Kyoto station building. I especially enjoyed fluffy Matcha role cake with Hoji tea which is different from other green tea. Hoji tea or "Hoji-cha" is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal, so it has a toasty flavor. Staff in this shop are very nice and kind, so please feel free to ask any questions!
1Must Eat !
Matcha ice cream and jelly / ¥626
This matcha ice cream and jelly dessert is a popular item on the menu, and it has been on the menu since before the renovations. The fresh and juicy matcha jelly and matcha ice cream taste simple, but you can still feel the rich taste of matcha in them, and the taste is addicting. I recommend eating the matcha with the sweet red beans, this way the taste is even better. The slightly warm white rice flour dumplings and the plump, stewed black beans make this charming dessert something you have to...more try at least once.
2Must Eat !
Kinako ice cream / ¥410
On top of a kinako, or roasted soybean flour, there is more kinako, so this dish can be said to be a great kinako extravaganza. The rich taste of kinako can be tasted in the soft ice cream and it’s really delicious. How about eating this as dessert?
matcha latte
3Let's Try !
Matcha latte / ¥518
The sweetness of the steamed milk combined with the bitterness of the matcha tea makes this matcha latte have just the right amount of sweetness. Since matcha is both sweet and bitter, this latte goes well with other desserts too, and you won’t feel like the desserts are too sweet. Have a cup of matcha latte as your afternoon tea!
