A world of their own, a fun Izakaya in Downtown Kyoto
Sit and be surrounded by pictures and posters all over the wall and ceiling in Chikyuuya. Chikyu, meaning globe, is an unusual place but have a luring sense of appeal. Inside of this Izakaya hangs a flag of Brazil, and on the wall are photos by young photographers, and old posters from 70’s or 80’s, it’s a place that has a world of its own. Chikyuuya is a place to mingle with friends in a fun atmosphere with great drinks and food. Everything is affordable and in big portions. For about 40 years, this place kept making locals happy. Keeping the prices low is a sense of compassion for everyone, from poor college students to working salary-men, to be able to have a drink and satisfy their stomach with deliciousness.
Sara Udon / ￥648
Prepare for a large portion when you order this Sara Udon, or “Udon plate”. Udon noodles are in savory broth with vegetables topped with green onions and Katsuo Bushi (Dried bonito flakes). It’ perfect for sharing between 3 to 4 people.
Gyoza / ￥540
Many people claim that Gyoza is the best partner for a glass of beer. The Gyoza at Chikyuuya is pan fried and served with a side of their original sesame sauce. Vinegary sesame sauce goes brilliantly with this Gyoza.
Neko Meshi / ￥432
A rice bowl dish is uniquely named as Neko Meshi, or “Cat Rice”. Most Japanese people are familiar with feeding cats with a bowl of rice mixed with whatever is available back in the olden days. No need to be grossed out about this Neko Meshi though. Rice is topped with delicious ingredients and when combined all together, is a bowl of satisfaction. Rice is topped with different types of pickled vegetables, kimchee, tuna with mayonnaise, sprinkle of seaweed, and dried bonito flakes.
Umepoca / ￥378
A sweet tasting cocktail of two popular drinks of Umeshu and Pocari Sweat. Umeshu, or plum wine, is often enjoyed in Japan and abroad. Combining it with Pocari Sweat, a popular sports drink in Japan, is amusing and tasty.
