An ethnic cafe to pop in for tasty Asian food and handmade bread
Pan to Gohan AOW serves a unique combination of ethnic food and handmade bread. The owner once had a cafe in PAI, a small village of Thailand. There she started making handmade bread as delicious bread were not easily available in the village at that time. Based on these experiences, AOW has become famous offering tasty local Asian food and bread in Kyoto. The café is located at the corner of the street in Ichijoji. Once you pop in the café, ethnic interior with colorful decoration and radio music in Thai aired makes you feel as if you are in a local canteen in an Asian country. The owner and chef are very friendly and their desire to offer in-house food that is both safe and delicious is most fascinating. Unlike its small size, AOW has a lot to offer.
Kuay Teow Nam / ￥900
The lunch menu changes daily and today’s choice is a Thai-style rice noodle soup (Kuay Teow Nam). The soup is light in itself and can be seasoned with hot fish source, hot vinegar, sugar and chili peppers. The noodles are very soft and make a good contrast with crispy bean sprouts, corianders and greens. Healthy and good for your stomach.
Hot Chai / ￥450
Using tea leaves from a famous Indian café in Osaka, AOW’s Indian spiced tea, usually known as Chai, is not spiced at all and very mild compared to one served in other cafes. You can have a go even if you’re not very keen on spices. The café also provides spiced Chai on the menu. Add sugar to your Chai according to your preference.
Handmade bread / Around ￥200~￥300
A variety of bread is handmade from domestically-grown wheat and natural yeast over time. They are very chewy, but not too hard, having lots of flavor. Local people who long for natural and quality breads come all the way to the café to buy their favorites. For foreigners, bread with sweet bean paste will be one of our recommendations.
Melted rice with fish source / ￥500
Apart from handmade bread, the café sells ethic table wares, child clothes and foodstuff for take away. Interesting one among these is melted rice with fish source originally made by the chef. This ingredient is good at making various dishes, such as sauted vegetables, fried rice and ramen soup. Good for souvenirs.
