Tonkotsu Ramen with a Sukiyaki-like Sweetness

Todai Kyoto / 東大 京都店

Todai Kyoto
Todai Kyoto is one of the restaurants that are open in the Ramen theme park “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI”, where famous Ramen restaurants gather from all over the Japan.
The most well-known Ramen restaurants in the country are here at “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI”, and each restaurant has a unique delicious taste. In addition to this, its convenient location right by the JR Kyoto Station also leads to the theme park’s immense popularity, with many tourists visiting it constantly.
Todai is one of the top class ramen...more restaurants even among the ones at “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI”, which started in “Tokushima” prefecture, in the Shikoku area of Japan. It’s most known for its Sweet and Spicy Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen, its soup cooked from pig bones boiled for a long time and combined with a special soy sauce soup.
The restaurant has an open atmosphere like a food stand, with full of energy with the staff’s enthusiastic voices filling the air.

Less known but widely loved by both tourists and locals. Recommended if your schedule permits.
Good for Fans
Hideaway shops and spots of worthwhile destination. Recommended if you are keen on these genres.
For Enthusiasts
Very popular among enthusiasts on these genres. Not always suitable if you are not particularly interested.
This is my favorite shop at “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI”. The combination of Ramen, Gyoza, and beer is incredible, and when I eat it after a day at work, I even feel happy to be alive! There are lots of tourists, but this is a shop loved by the locals as well.
Todai is a popular restaurant at “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI” that’s always full of visitors. I recommend ordering extra meat. Great Ramen and rich-flavored meat together is the best combination.
For those who dislike raw eggs, “Ajitama (boiled and flavored eggs)” are great as well, so do try ordering that as well.
The thick Tonkotsu Shoyu soup goes great with white rice as well. The sweet and spicy pork belly topping is delicious too, so I recommend ordering the Ramen with meat. The side menus, such as fried rice and Gyoza are all high quality, making this a restaurant that I’d want to visit multiple times.
Thin pork belly slices ramen noodle (Regular)
1Must Eat !
Thin pork belly slices ramen noodle (Regular) / ¥850
Todai’s most common Ramen, Tokushima Ramen noodle, with added pork belly slices stewed in sweet and spicy soup. The flavor of the Ramen soup is rich Tonkotsu Shoyu(soy sauce). The flavor is rich, but is sweet and spicy, reminding foodies of Japanese Sukiyaki.
The bowl is relatively small and there is not a lot of noodle in it, so we recommend that those with an appetite ask for “Omori,” or extra large.
2Must Eat !
Gyoza / 8pieces ¥400
One of Todai’s side menus, Gyoza(Chinese dumplings).
Todai’s Gyoza is smaller than usual gyoza. I personally suggest eating it with a sprinkle of citrus and dipped in salt and pepper.
The Ramen is a bit heavy, so by eating it alternatively with the Gyoza which is flavored with sour citrus, the two create a harmonious taste.
Raw egg
3Let's Try !
Raw egg / Free
On the table is a basket with raw eggs, which are free to eat. Try it in your rich Ramen soup, or you can pour it on your rice. I recommend putting in just one yolk in the Ramen.
This turns the soup mild and yummy without thinning it out, so I definitely suggest doing that.
Dried plum
4Let's Try !
Dried plum / Free
The dried plums on the table are free as well.
The recommended way to enjoy it is to put one in the Ramen soup after you’re almost done eating the Ramen. The aftertaste becomes light, leaving your stomach feeling fresh. However, dried plums are very salty, so be careful not to put in too much.
How to Order & Eat
How to Order & Eat Todai Kyoto

How to Order & Eat Todai KyotoFirst, buy a food ticket from the ticket machine outside the shop. Put in some cash, choose a Ramen, and push the button. It has an English menu, so ordering shouldn’t be too difficult. There’s a set menu for lunch that’s a pretty good deal, so be sure to check that out when ordering.
- Order Tips -
If you want to adjust the amount of noodles, you can add 100 yen to make it Oomori or extra large, so push the button that says Large 大 to order it.
If you aren’t that hungry, or if you want to try other Ramen at “KYOTO RAMEN KOJI”, push the button that says Small 小 at the ticket machine. This will let you change the size smaller than regular and Oomori ones.
