Shisendo Temple & Ichijoji RamenFeb. 09, 2016 UPDATE
Vegetables and sweetness condensed into flavorful ramen soup

Tonryu - Main store

/ 東龍 本店
The Tonryu ramen restaurant is a ten minute walk away from Eizan Electric Railway’s Mototanaka Station. It stands apart as one of the most popular restaurants of the ramen battleground that is the Ichijo-ji Temple area.
Tonryu ramen belongs to a variety of ramen commonly referred to as "Vegetable Potage Soup". Several varieties of vegetable are made into a flavorful soup and then stewed together with tonkotsu pork bone soup, creating a dish that merges the sweetness of vegetables with the rich ...moresavoriness of pork bone. This ramen is at once heavy and refreshing, qualities that would normally be considered incompatible. If you’ve never eaten "Vegetable Potage Soup" before, we urge you to try it at least once. It’s sure to dramatically change your idea of ramen.
The restaurant has the feel of a modern Chinese restaurant and attracts a large number of female patrons (perhaps because of the abundance of vegetables used in the soup).

Tonryu’s soup is a diverse blend of ingredients—from vegetables to tonkotsu pork bone—so it’s hard to pinpoint the flavor. But we can guarantee you, while certainly out of the ordinary, this ramen tastes fantastic! Just trust us and give it a try!
Located around Ichijo-ji Temple, Tonryu is a popular restaurant that’s always bustling with local customers. Its famous Tonryu Soba is a delicious ramen dish with vivid vegetable flavor.
I recommend their braised mince pork and rice bowl. You absolutely have to try it! Take a bite of this outstanding dish, masterfully seasoned with a unique blend of spices, and you’ll get a sense of the high standards and originality that have made Tonryu into the popular ramen restaurant it is today.
Yokubari Tonryu Ramen
1Must Eat !
Yokubari Tonryu Ramen / ¥930
Tonryu’s specialty is the Tonryu Ramen. Add to this generous portions of noodles and char siu pork fillets(chashu), top with a boiled egg stewed in flavorful sauce, and you have the deluxe Yokubari Tonryu Ramen.
Hot, spicy flavor permeates pleasantly through this soup—a thick, salty, and slightly sweet blend of many vegetables. This dish uses wavy noodles, which is not commonplace in Kyoto. Delightfully springy, these noodles hold the thick soup surprisingly well. All the magnificence of Tonryu...more’s ramen, concentrated into one bowl. Highly recommended!
Yokubari Chuka Ramen
2Must Eat !
Yokubari Chuka Ramen / ¥930
Tonryu’s other specialty, Chuka Ramen. Add to this generous portions of noodles and chashu, top with a boiled egg stewed in flavorful sauce, and you have the deluxe Yokubari Chuka Ramen.
Compared to the Yokubari Tonryu Ramen, this dish’s soy-sauce based soup is light and transparent. For even better flavor, kick it up a notch with garlic chives with chili pepper.
3Let's Try !
Ro-ba-bun / ¥350
Stewed pork on a steaming bed of rice. At first glance, it looks like the chashu and rice bowls you often find at ramen restaurants. However, it has a very light seasoning whose flavor and aroma are reminiscent of Chinese medicinal cuisine. The more you eat the more hooked you’ll get on this mysterious seasoning.
Spicy Karaage
4Let's Try !
Spicy Karaage / ¥350
Spicy Karaage, available on Tonryu’s sides menu.
Tonryu’s unique seasoning give its thick and juicy Karaage fried chicken a flavor and aroma that sets it apart from the norm. Served in easy-to-eat, bite-sized morsels sure to please diners.
How to Order & Eat
Tonryu How to order & eatMenu items are written on the walls, so when you want to place an order just look up. Address the staff in English and you’ll be handed an English menu, making ordering a breeze.
- Order Tips -
If you want to adjust the amount of noodles, for 70 yen you can upgrade your meal to Oomori size. The portion size is considerably large, and is sure to satisfy the appetites of male customers. For female customers, however, the standard Namimori size should prove filling.

What’s more, Tonryu has implemented a Kaedama system, in which—after eating your ramen—you can add more noodles to your leftover soup. Unlike Oomori orders, you won’t have to worry about your noodles getting soggy.

If you’d like Kaedama, tell one of the employees

“Kaedama wo kudasai.” just before you finish your noodles.

Pay 100 yen and in about five minutes you’ll have freshly cooked noodles.
