The restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station. The Kiyamachi area is one of Kyoto’s main hubs for bars and eateries, and it has a number of slender alleyways that crisscross throughout the neighborhood. You’ll find Umaimonyaki Sun tucked away in one of those small alleyways crossing through Kiyamachi. Umaimonyaki Sun is especially popular for their masterfully cooked yakitori chicken skewers served with specially prepared dipping sauces, as well as their fresh selection of vegetables. Their yakitori is perfectly cooked with a juicy texture and delightful aroma, which is an incredible way to enjoy the chicken’s distinctive savoriness. Their vegetable ingredients include hard-to-find locally sourced veggies from Kyoto that are fresh enough to enjoy even when they’re raw. They also carry a selection of alcohol to pair up with their food. In addition to their yakitori, they are also known for their specialty “Lard Rice,” which is an excellent dish to finish your meal off with. As you might expect from the name, Lard Rice is prepared with warm rice mixed together with lard, which is a simple yet satisfying dish that will leave you craving another helping for days to come. They cook their yakitori over high grade charcoal for a perfect juicy finish that brings out the chicken’s delicious savory flavor. With five different kinds of skewers on one platter, you can have fun sampling the different textures and flavors of each one. *You can add an additional 5 skewers for ¥900.

This dish features cooked rice topped with lard along with a special homemade sauce. The lard seeps in and coats each grain of rice together with their homemade sweet and salty sauce, which makes for a deep and flavorful dish. It’s perfect when you have a bite right after the warm rice is mixed up nicely with the lard and sauce. There is also a fun little set of illustrations on the menu that shows you how they make it.
