Famous for its delicious egg sandwich, La Madrague inherits the traditions of the old cafes of Kyoto
You can find La Madrague in a residential area, a 10-minute walk away from subway Karasuma Oike Station and close to Nijo Castle. Before La Madrague, Café Seven was at its place, operating for around 50-years, starting in the year 1963. La Madrague was started here to respect the dying wishes of the owner of Café Seven, and so La Madrague’s atmosphere, to this day, reminds one of the Showa period of Japanese history when Café Seven was in business. When introducing La Madrague, you cannot forget their famous egg sandwich. This egg sandwich is made in the same way as the egg sandwiches of the famous Kyoto restaurant Corona, unfortunately no longer in business, were made. La Madrague’s egg sandwich is truly a delicacy, and it brings back to life the egg sandwich of Korona. Many people visit this café just to try this sandwich. Besides their sandwich, La Madrague also offers many yoshoku-style dishes, meaning that the dishes here are a combination of western and Japanese influences like their Japanese ketchup-Napolitan pasta served on a hot plate. The dishes you enjoy in the retro-stylish atmosphere of the café are all nostalgic and have a gentle taste to them. La Madrague is a great Japanese café that makes sure that the traditions of “kissaten-style” cafés are kept alive.

Corona’s egg sandwich / ¥680
The omelet in this egg sandwich is so soft it's going to surprise you, and the dashimaki-omelet contains a luxurious amount of four eggs. On one side of the sandwich, you have mustard sauce, and on the other, handmade demi-glace.

Teppanyaki hot plate ketchup-Napolitan / ¥880
A raw egg is dropped on the hot plate – and then it is topped with Japanese ketchup pasta known as Napolitan. This is a really popular menu item at La Madrigue. When you eat the pasta together with the egg, you get to taste the egg together with La Madrague’s homemade ketchup, making this a very special taste.

Mixed juice / ¥530
Among their drinks menu, their “mixed juice” is an especially popular item. It is a mix of peach, banana, pineapple, and other fruits, and it doesn’t skimp on these. The taste is gentle.
Cream soda (red and green)

Cream soda (red and green) / ¥530 per glass
Cream soda is a Japanese name for a soda float. The red one uses pomegranate taste-syrup and the green one melon. The taste is refreshing and cooling.

La Madrague is the most famous “kissaten” in Kyoto. You can enjoy the old-time kissaten atmosphere here. If you come to Kyoto, I hope you will try the egg sandwich here. The sandwich looks very nice, but the portion you get is also very big and the sandwich tasty. On most days the egg sandwich will sell out, so I recommend going early and being prepared to line up.

La Madrague is a kissaten I definitely hope you will visit when you come to Kyoto. Not only their dishes but also the look and feel of the café are very inviting. I’m sure everyone will not only be surprised by the size of the egg sandwich but also be moved by the nostalgic and gentle taste of it.
