Shimogamo Shrine is one of the World Heritage Sites chosen by UNESCO. The shrine is surrounded by trees emitting fresh air to its surroundings making visitors feel very relaxed. The shrine is founded in the 6th century making it one of the oldest in Japan.
Many events are held in Shimogamo Shine such as Aoi Matsuri Festival which is regarded as one of the main three festivals in Kyoto. Meigetsu Kangensai Festival is taken place to adore the beautiful moonlight while enjoying the orchestra in th...moree shrine garden. On the stage, court dance and music (free) and tea ceremony (¥800 for an advance ticket/ ¥1,000 for a day ticket) will be offered for guests. On the road to the entrance of Shimogamo Shrine, “Kagaribi Fair” will be held with about 20 long-established tea shops. Please enjoy the fine taste of Japanese desserts in this event!

For Enthusiasts
Very popular among enthusiasts on these genres. Not always suitable if you are not particularly interested.
I often visit Shimogamo Shrine for a short walk in Tadasuno Mori Forest in the precinct of Shimogamo Shrine. It is very refreshing to feel a nature closely even in the town area. Lots of events and festivals are held in Shimogamo Shrine and this “Meigetsu Kangensai Festival” is a seasonal event to adore the beautiful moon. Not only the moon itself, but you can also enjoy the Japanese court dance and music as well as Japanese desserts you can get on the road to the entrance of Shimogamo Shrine!

Court dance
During this event, there will be a court dance offering on the stage. You can have a seat while enjoying it (only limited numbers of seats/ free). If you wish to see a court dance in Japan, it normally costs money. However, you can enjoy the very traditional court dance in Shimogamo Shrine for free. Please enjoy in the calm evening of autumn season.
