The lanterns and flowers that color Arashiyama at night
In Kyoto, an event known as Hanatouro is held in Arashiyama each December, and in Higashiyama each March. At the event, a number of streets, temples, shrines and natural landscapes brimming with Kyoto's characteristic historical atmosphere are beautifully illuminated. At the Hanatouro event held in December, the Arashiyama area is colored by the glow of andon (A small lantern made from bamboo and plastic) and beautiful ikebana flower arrangements, much to the enjoyment of visiting tourists. Although the magnificent natural beauty of Arashiyama is wonderful by day, a visit to the area on a winter's night also has a charm that is highly recommended. There will be various festivities held throughout the Saga-Arashiyama area during the 10 days of the event. The Bamboo Forest Walkway—famous for its tall bamboo forest—and Togetsu-kyo Bridge are illuminated, allowing you to experience enchanting scenery that is somewhat different from that of the daytime. The Akari to Hana no Michi (Light and Blossoms Pathway)—decorated by andon and ikebana—is also a highlight. Other events are staged in addition to these illuminations, such as special nighttime visits to shrines in the Arashiyama area (Nonomiya Jinja Shrine, Jojakko-ji Temple, etc.) and participatory events. Arashiyama Hanatouro is regarded as a feature of winter in Kyoto and is loved by tourists and locals alike. Togetsu-kyo Bridge Illumination
Togetsu-kyo Bridge and Arashiyama are beautifully illuminated like this for the duration of the event. A combination of magnificent natural beauty and enchanting lights can be enjoyed from Togetsu-kyo Bridge. The area becomes congested with large crowds of people every year, but this impressive scenery really should be viewed with your own eyes!
Light and Blossoms Pathway
A path tracing Kyoto's natural landscape and streets brimming with historical atmosphere, gently illuminated by the light of approximately 2500 andon, with a touch of color added by ikebana. This is the Light and Blossoms Pathway. Kyoto's unique townscape matches superbly with the glow of andon to produce a pathway that you will unconsciously find yourself wanting to wander along. Sometimes it's nice to forget the time and take a leisurely stroll through Kyoto at night.
This extravagant ikebana is another highlight of Arashiyama Hanatouro. Each year, illuminated ikebana arrangements by the Kyoto Ikebana Association are exhibited along the Light and Blossoms Pathway. These voluminous ikebana arrangements blend into the illuminated townscape, adding to the portrayal of a wonderful Kyoto night.
Every day for the duration of the event, a space is opened where you can exhibit your very own original andon, on which you have freely drawn illustrations or written messages. A scaled-down copy of your illustration can also be instantly reproduced on a palm-sized andon, which you can then take home (Fee: ¥500; limited quantity on a first-come-first-served basis). Why not get one as a souvenir of this wonderful event?
