Don’t miss the birthplace of red bean paste
Red bean paste is believed to have been made here for the first time in Japan. You get to the birthplace after going through the bamboo forest. Red bean paste, which is called “anko” in Japanese, is often used for Japanese confectionery. It is made by stewing red beans with sugar. Although the area has been vacant for a long time, Kyoto city has started growing red beans in the area again. Soon you may be able to taste the original taste of the red bean paste as it used to be over a thousand years ago.

Though Sagano is far away from downtown, many tourists come here every year. Tourists can take the Sagano Scenic Railway to enjoy magnificent mountains along Hozugawa River. Walking through the tall and green bamboo grove gives you a feeling of peace and calmness. Nonomiya Shrine, Jojakkoji Temple, and other temples are also popular spots in Arashiyama which is close to Sagano. Sagano makes people leave the noise of urban areas behind and return to nature. Take a journey that will surely make you feel refreshed!
