For Enthusiasts
Very popular among enthusiasts on these genres. Not always suitable if you are not particularly interested.
Since I regularly eat tofu as a side dish or put it in a miso soup for dinner, I really enjoyed making tofu in Yatsuhashi-an Shanari. 2nd floor of the building is for hands-on experiences, and 1st floor is for souvenirs. Tofu making process requires a bit of techniques. We recommend you to join the lesson in a group if you feel unsure about trying out alone.
It is located near famous sightseeing spots, such as Nanzen-ji Temple, Heian-Jinju Shrine, and more. Please visit around this in one of th...moree days you are in Kyoto!
Must See !
Look carefully at boiling soybeans
One of the first steps of making tofu is to mix soybean extracts with water for 12 minutes or so. Since the liquid will be boiled within 5 minutes, please control the fire in order not to boil over. If you have a friend to join in this experience, one person could keep the maintenance of the fire and the other person could keep mixing.
Must See !
Oboro Tofu (Curd tofu)
Oboro Tofu is a kind of tofu, though it does not look like ordinary tofu. This has been trendy in Japan because it is fresher than tofu sold in a supermarket. It is made with a lid on for 15 minutes or so. Please be patient when making it if you want a delicious Oboro Tofu.
Must Do !
Take off tofu from the boxed frame
After putting the Oboro Tofu in an exclusive boxed frame, you need to bring it in to the water slowly to keep its shape of square. The water is extremely cold and your hands may become numb during this final task of tofu-making.
Must Do !
Enjoy your tofu
You can eat tofu hot or cold. If deciding to try it both ways, a staff will be pleased to serve both styles. Original soy sauce will be served which brings the strong beans flavors out. Eat with chopped Japanese leeks and sliced bonito for extra deliciousness.
