Rakusho is a tea house in Kyoto, in front of the main gate of Kodai-ji Temple, famous for its warabimochi
Rakusho is a tea house located on the Path of Nene close to many famous sightseeing spots such as Kodai-ji and Entoku-in temples. Inside the tea house the atmosphere is quintessentially Japanese and you get to enjoy sweets and matcha while you watch the carps swimming in the pond of the Japanese garden. But Rakusho is most famous for their warabimochi. The warabimochi are topped with high-quality, fragrant kinako, or roasted soy bean flour, and also contain a lot of matcha, and they are so popular that there is often a line in front of the shop. Warabimochi is the perfect souvenir, no matter whether you are buying them for your friends, family, or your workplace.

The natural sweetness and softness are what is special about the classic warabimochi at Rakusho, called Kusa Warabimochi. The Kusa Warabimochi are almost overflowing with so much roasted soy bean flour, but the flour is not too sweet, and you can eat a lot of it with every bite, and still not feel like the warabimochi was too sweet. The taste of matcha is also not too sweet, but has a nice slight bitterness to it. You can find these rice cakes by the cash register.

They also have tables so you can sit down and relax. Their matcha has such a nice aroma that even people who are not that fond of green tea may be able to drink it. Since the tea goes well with warabi-mochi, drink a little at atime and enjoy them together. *Available as a set with warabi-mochi. (¥980)

It’s nice that Rakusho is really close to Kodai-ji Temple so you can go buy some warabimochi after you have been sightseeing. The warabimochi sold here are so famous that you can even buy them from department stores such as Takashimaya and Daimaru. These are great souvenirs for the folks back home, but please note that the best before date on them is quite short, so you should eat them as soon as possible.

I personally think that the warabimochi here are the best in Kyoto; they have just the right amount of sweetness. The best before date on them is very short, so I recommend eating them in your hotel room and making the warabimochi a lasting Kyoto memory.
