Kiyomizu-dera Temple and its Surroundings
Part 4

Special experiences

There are a few activities that we feel visitors to Kiyomizu-dera Temple really should experience during their trip; they might only take a little time out of your day, but they’re sure to leave you with some wonderful memories and make your visit to the area a truly unforgettable experience.
We highly recommend trying out some of the following activities. Get in touch with the heart of Japan and experience a little something outside of the ordinary.
Ride in a Rickshaw! ― Ebisuya
Walking around the hilly, stone-paved roads of the area around Kiyomizu-dera is enough to tire anybody out. One way to take a break is to drop by a local shop for a breather, but if you’re looking for something a little more refined (and fun!) then what better way to spend your time than in a rickshaw?
Hop into one of these local man-powered taxis, pulled by knowledgeable and entertaining staff, and you’ll experience the Kiyomizu area from an entirely new perspective that by simply walking alone.
You might find yourself brimming with excitement for hours once your trip is over! Be sure to give it a try if you get the opportunity.
Strolling in Kimono ― Shiki Sakura
You’re sure to catch a glimpse of people decked out in kimonos during more than a few times as you walk around the streets of Kyoto. If you’d like to join them then why not try one on for yourself? Wearing a kimono is a sure-fire way to make your visit to the Kiyomizu-dera area a memorable one; slipping an arm through the sleeve of a kimono is enough to brighten up anyone’s day, even Japanese people!
Choose your favorite colors, designs, and accessories, and remember it’s important to catch a rest if you can’t get used to wearing the traditional Japanese zori and geta footwear.
Pottery Experience ― Mori Toukikan
Making your own hand-formed pottery is an experience we recommend to anyone during their visit to Kyoto. Using your own hands to make something directly from the earth itself is doubtless a rare and valuable opportunity for the modern office worker!
Follow a few simple rules, mold the clay into whatever shape you like, draw a design, and add decorations, and you’ll no doubt have an unforgettable experience making your very own unique work of art.
It might take a little while before you can hold the completed article in your hands again, but once you do it’ll be a great reminder of your trip!
The road leading up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple is full of delightful Kyoto views, but it’s also got more than enough to offer for folks who want to do something a little more than just walking! Take a chance and join in on one of the many experiences and attractions in the area, and you might just get a glimpse of Japan from a whole new perspective.

So, what kind of trip will you make your visit to Kyoto? Will it be a regular journey, or something a little bit more special? The choice is up to you!
