Story & Recommendation
A Fushimi inn loved by a historical Japanese hero
The Teradaya inn has been operated since the Edo period and is located in the Fushimi area—which historically was a port famous for sake breweries. The inn became a well-known place in connection with Ryoma Sakamoto who was a prominent figure in Japan's modernization and contributed to overthrowing the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 19th century. As he really loved the inn and as it even became the place of his assassination by his political enemy, it has become a mecca for Japanese history buffs. Some marks on the walls made during his assassination still remain. There are also some souvenir shops selling Sakamoto goods in the area, so feel free to have a wonder and pick up some souvenirs on your way.
