Imperial Palace & Teramachi

The Kyoto Imperial Palace was home to the emperors of Japan for more than 500 years. It is surrounded by a vast park full of greenery. The districts of the city were laid out in 794 …morewhen the seat of government was moved to Kyoto from Nara, and their traces are preserved today in the grid-like layout of the streets of Kyoto.

In the Teramachi area to the east of the Imperial Palace, there are many shops selling choice Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese tea and sweets. For example, the famous green tea merchant Ippodo was founded in 1717 making it a true veteran among veterans.
