The spirit of Zen in Kyoto

Nanzenji Temple & Ginkakuji Temple

They say Kyoto is a city best enjoyed on foot, but if you want to stroll along at your own pace in quiet contemplation, this is the area for you. For the best route, first bask in an atmosphere …moreof the Zen aesthetic of wabi and sabi at Ginkaku-ji Temple, and then take the Philosopher’s Walk, where philosopher Nishida Kitaro used to walk as he meditated, to Nanzen-ji Temple. If you want to enjoy the fall foliage season, visiting Eikan-do is a sure bet, though it can get crowded.

The 2-kilometer Philosopher’s Walk is brightly colored by cherry blossoms in spring and maple leaves in fall, and fireflies flit around in summer, making it not just a famous sightseeing spot, but a favorite walking trail for locals as well.
