Autumn is getting closer, and this, of course, means that the convenience stores of Japan are putting out all kinds of seasonal sweets. 7-Eleven, Family Mart, Lawson, the big three of Japanese convenience stores, all have many different kinds of treats for you to better enjoy autumn. This time we have chosen 10 of those sweets, and here they are, and if you read to the end, you’ll get to know which one of them is the absolutely best autumn sweet!
We had four of our Sharing Kyoto staff taste all of these sweets, and then score them. The scores you can see below are the averages.
10Kuri kinton (Candied chestnuts with sweet potatoes)
Kuri kinton is just chestnut with mashed sweet potatoes, so the taste is very simple. Unfortunately, these convenience store kuri kintons were not that good, which may be because the chestnut taste was not strong enough.

9Sweet potato mochi filled with whipped cream
The sweet potatoes used in this mochi come from Kagoshima Prefecture, and taste great, plus you have the sweet whipped cream in the middle, making the mochi surprisingly easy to eat.
But because of this whipped cream, the mochi feels a bit overly sweet and heavy.

8Japanese-style parfait with hojicha jelly and sweet potato
This parfait is full of hojicha jelly and mousse, and it’s topped with sweet potato, sweet potato paste, and shiratama mochi. The toppings are a bit on the sweet side, but the hojicha jelly plays a refreshing counterpart for the sweet toppings.

But this sweet divided opinions, those who like hojicha really like it, and those who don’t, well, they don’t like it at all.

7Dorayaki filled with chestnut paste and whipped cream
This dorayaki-pancake is not filled with red bean paste like they usually are, but instead it’s filled with chestnut paste made from Italian chestnuts. The taste of the chestnut paste is pretty good, but overall this dorayaki feels a bit too sweet because of the whipped cream.

6Japanese-style sweet potato jelly
This sweet potato jelly is made by using Naruto Kintoki –branded sweet potatoes mixed with cream. The taste is sweet, and almost like milk candy.

This jelly has a really strong sweet potato flavor, but it’s also a healthy option for the health-conscious because it doesn’t contain many calories.

5Sweet potato crepe
This crepe contains both normal whipped cream and sweet potato whipped cream. This is then topped with a burnt caramel sauce making the crepe quite sweet.

I really like crepes, but I don’t want my crepes to contain THIS much whipped cream. I would have really liked it if there wasn’t as much whipped cream.

4Pumpkin pudding
This pumpkin pudding is made from pumpkins harvested in Hokkaido, and the taste of it is creamy and thick. You even have burnt caramel sauce on the bottom, contrasting nicely with the pudding.

3Sweet potato cream puff
This cream puff even looks like a sweet potato: it’s purple like the real thing! It’s filled with yellow sweet potato custard.

Even though at first the taste may seem just like normal custard, but the aftertaste has a strong sweet potato taste to it. This one seems to sell pretty well, when it came out it was hard to find on the selves!

2Harvest festival parfait
This parfait is topped with seasonal ingredients, pumpkin and chestnut paste like in a Montblanc cake. Under these you can find pumpkin cheesecake, whipped cream, and chestnut mousse.

I like the combination of chestnut and pumpkin, and once you start eating this parfait, it’s hard to put your spoon down!

1Sweet potato tart
This sweet potato tart is made using the famous sweet potato brand called Anno-imo, and the taste is sweet, and the tart even looks great with its brulee-style burnt potato-whirl. This is the number one not only because of the potato, but also because of the buttery crust which goes great with the sweet potato filling.
