Imamiya Shrine Adjacent Mochi Dango loved for Over 120 Years
The sweet fragrance of “Aburi mochi” coming from Aburimochi Kazariya has invited visitors to the Imamiya shrine to sit down, relax and enjoy these traditional Kyoto sweets for the last 120 years. Aburimochi Kazariya specialize in bamboo skewered and charcoal grilled balls of mochi (glutinous rice flour) which they lather with a white miso sauce. These mochi treats also come with a side of Japanese tea. As Aburimochi Kazariya is situated right out side the east gate of the Imamiya Shrine, which is dedicated to the deity of good health, they have all their bamboo blessed by the shrine. This in turn started a belief that their chargrilled mochi is good maintain good health. In addition, it’s believed that after this mochi you’ll be protected from sickness for the year. As there are various seating options within the store, such as the terrace, Tatami (Japanese bamboo mat), and more, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your time.

Aburimochi Kazariya use glutinous rice flour to make their mochi, skwer them then sprinkle the small clumps of mochi with with soybean powder. After this they then grill the mochi over a charcoal grill and finally dip them in an original sweet white miso sauce. As the mochi will harden as it cools, make sure to eat it as quickly as possible to enjoy the best possible taste. A staff member makes and grills the aburi mochi outsied the store, so feel free to give their delicious smelling mochi grilling process a wee peek.

The staff of Aburimochi Kazariya make their famous dango mochi balls right outside the store! It gets so lively when they’re making the little balls of mochi and is super interesting to watch. Try hold back your hunger as the delicious smell of the grilled mochi starts to fill the air. If you would like to get some for later, take away dango are available from ¥1,500 for three skewers.
