Story & Recommendation
One cup of shochu from ¥300! At this Kiyamachi standing bar, you don’t need to spend a lot to have a good time
You can find the popular Standing BAR Kyasa in a multi-tenant building in Kiyamachi, just a ten-minute walk from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station. This small but popular hole in the wall holds only 15 people, and it’s always packed with regular and foreign customers. The secret to its success? The wall behind the bar, which displays the owner’s carefully selected range of Japanese sake and shochu that can be served for only ¥300 and up. An immense variety of brands awaits you, from staples to rare finds. The owner is particularly proud of his shochu selection. Small numbered stickers adorn every bottle, and a “3” means that you can order one cup for ¥300. The cash-only ordering and payment system is particularly accessible to foreigners. Just put some money in the bowl in front of you, and when you order, the bartender will take the amount they need from the bowl. When your bowl gets empty, simply top it up and order away. Standing bar Kyasa is the perfect place to enjoy your evening without worrying about language barriers or prices. For a snack, you can get the bar’s famous “¥100 side dishes” of Japanese sweets, canned foods, and more. Around ¥1000 will get you all you need. The bartender and his customers always have a friendly atmosphere, so women traveling alone can feel comfortable here too. Standing BAR Kyasa doesn’t charge for entry, so please walk right in and have a good time.
