Try the small size “Mame-zushi” originally for Maiko in Gion
Have you ever wondered how Maiko, apprentice Geiko, eats sushi? If you imagine sushi, it is usually a little bit big for one bite even for men. This restaurant “Mametora” offers “Mame-zushi” which is a small and round size sushi for Maiko so that they can eat easily. As you can see in this picture, you may enjoy its beautiful & colorful box of sushi by sight and also by the fresh taste. As it is located in Gion where many Maiko and Geiko work, you may have a chance to encounter them and it would make you imagine that they also visit this restaurant to enjoy the special “Mame-zushi”.

This menu is more reasonable. Although it wouldn’t come along with Obanzai, various kinds of Kyoto style home cooking, this “Mame-zushi” is their signature dish. If you could have a private room, you may also enjoy the beautiful garden looking through the room. It is interesting to note that you don’t need to put soy sauce on this Mame-zushi as they are already well seasoned.

If you visit this restaurant during the lunch time, you can choose from two menus. This set would come along with Obanzai, soup based on white miso, fish (changes every season), “Mame-zushi”, the small size sushi, soup based on red miso and dessert. This small size sushi is very cute and very easy to eat by one bite as it is presented for Maiko who have a small mouth. We suggest that you eat it while imagining that Maiko also taste this sushi.
How to Order
During the lunch time, there are usually two kinds of menus. For dinner time, they offer 2 kinds of Mame-zushi and 3 kinds of Kaiseki, sophisticated traditional Japanese cuisine brought in courses.
- Order Tips -
As there is an English menu, it is easy to order. If you would like to see what kinds of dish menus they would offer, we suggest that you also refer the Japanese menu.

I was so amazed by the cuteness of this “Mame-zushi”! After hearing that this sushi is originally for Maiko who are not supposed to open their mouths widely, I understood more about the history behind. It is interesting to note that you don’t necessarily put soy sauce on the sushi as they have enough taste in themselves. As there are many staff who speak English, please feel free to ask any questions!
