Pontocho Robin

Enjoy painstakingly prepared Japanese cuisine by master chefs in a wonderfully Japanese environment
Pontocho, located in the bustling and very atmospherically Japanese downtown district of Kawaramachi in Kyoto, is a popular spot among tourists. Located here in the Pontocho area is the Japanese restaurant Pontocho Robin, housed in a 150 year old renovated town house. At the end of an alleyway on a stone paved street lit by streetlamps, is the entrance, beyond which is a wooden building and a small garden, with a large window facing the Kamogawa River. This restaurant is filled with the emblematic Japanese atmosphere of Kyoto. The chefs use seasonal ingredients, and diners enjoy painstakingly prepared cuisine and Kyoto-brewed sake. Highly recommended are the multicourse meals, filled with umami and the charm of Japanese cuisine, including fresh seafood dishes such as sashimi and grilled fish, and assortments of beautifully colorful small dishes. A la carte items include meat dishes prepared with Japanese beef. Between May and September, diners can take part in the Kyoto summer tradition of Yuka seating (outdoor floor seating along the Kamo River), relaxing in the comfortable breeze while enjoying their meal. This restaurant provides an atmosphere worthy of the city of Kyoto, with genuine Japanese cuisine. Diners in search of such a place should definitely check out Pontocho Robin.

This is a simple dish of salted and grilled Japanese Wagyu beef. The umami of the steak has an unbridled goodness. The meat is juicy and cooked to perfection. Let the staff know how you would like your steak cooked, well done, medium, or rare. The accompanying grilled vegetables are fragrant and keep their natural juicy goodness.

De-boned Sea Eel Otoshi / ¥2,300 (+tax)
It’s tradition in Kyoto to eat sea eel during the summer. It’s said that the ability of a chef lies in their ability to de-bone and prepare a sea eel to be easy to eat. The sea eel at Pontocho Robin is prepared to go down easy, while still retaining its soft texture. Sea eel has a light and simple flavor. We recommend the accompanying sauce which has been prepared with the delicious acidity of Japanese plum. For those looking to enjoy a Kyoto summer just like a local, sea eel is definite must try.
Sake

It’s also a good idea when ordering to ask for a sake that pairs well with your dinner. *The sake in the photo above is Sawaya Matsumoto from Kyoto, a dry sake with a refreshing flavor.

There is an English menu available, with an emphasis on items popular with foreigners. A recommend style is to order a course meal, and if you still have room left in your belly, to order some a la carte dishes.

- Order Tips -
• We recommend that sake lovers order several combinations of food and appropriately matching sake. Japanese sake is available chilled, warm, or sparkling. Ask the staff and they will be able to recommend a good sake to pair with your food.

Pontocho Robin is a restaurant which can be enjoyed by couples, families, and groups, for a variety of occasions. The cuisine is prepared without the use of any chemical seasonings, and flavored to bring out the umami flavor naturally inherent in the ingredients. All seasonings, including the dashi(soup stock) – an indispensable part of Japanese food – are homemade, and prepared with great care by the chefs. English menus are available, and with English-speaking staff on hand, you can comfortably enjoy your meal here!
