Story & Recommendation
A café renovated from a long-running public bath house
As you walk through the old door, colorful tiles that cover the walls will fill your vision. Sarasa Nishijin used to be a long-running public bath house and was renovated 2000 to give way to this café. If you’ve seen the film “Spirited Away” by Studio Ghibli, then you’ll feel like you’ve step right into a scene from the movie. What we liked about this café, other than its traditional Japanese atmosphere, is that set meals are available at any time. This means that you can enjoy healthy, tasty meals at what ever time you decide to visit this cafe. When their dinner time menu is available, you can order vegan food, set meals, a la carte, desserts and more.

Bowl of rice with avocado, tomatoes, kelp, and Tofu
Bowl of rice with avocado, tomatoes, kelp, and Tofu / ¥993
If you are vegetarian, this rice bowl may be for you! Sitting atop the rice is a good helping of cut avocado, tomatoes, salty kelp, and tofu. Sesame oil adds that extra layer while the salty kelp goes perfectly with the creamy avocado and fresh tomatoes. As the tofu used in this rice bowl is soft and mushy, it may be easiest eaten with the other ingredients.

Caramel cheese cake
Caramel cheese cake / ¥540
This is one of our favorite cheese cakes in Kyoto! The rich cheese cake matches fantastically with the caramel flavored whip cream. Although the cheese cake is very rich, you can easily eat the entire thing without getting full! Lightly sweetened, we recommend you eat the cheese cake with the whip cream.
3Let's Try!
Bowl of rice with stewed pork
Bowl of rice with stewed pork / ¥993
If you’re hungry, then this is what you should order! The pork is cut in big chunks and stewed with special seasonings for a long time. The pork is juicy and a bit sweet which goes well with white rice underneath. Try the pork and rice with the sliced leak, as it adds a layer of freshness to it all. Although it looks heavy, you’ll be surprised how easily you’ll eat it all up.
4Let's Try!
Calpis and framboise syrup soda
Calpis and framboise syrup soda / ¥594
Isn’t this drink so pretty? The Japanese lactic bacteria based drink “Calpis” and a berry syrup are layered beautifully in the glass. This drink is sweet but the berries on top of the glass work to balance it out. We recommend you order it with one of the set meals!
