Slurps for a single Udon noodle
Are you familiar with Udon? It’s a popular noodle dish enjoyed in all parts of Japan and abroad as well. You may be familiar with Udon, but have you ever had a bowl of Udon containing just one long thick noodle? Tawaraya is a well-established shop featuring their famous Tawaraya Udon, a long thick Udon noodle in hot broth with side of grated ginger. The Udon is not the only unique part of this shop. By the entrance is “chashitsu,” or room designed for Japanese tea ceremonies. Also by the entrance is a well – once an important part of people’s everyday life however, not being used today. This is a one and only Udon shop in Kitano Tenmangu shrine that many people stop by on the way or after visiting the shrine.
Tawaraya Udon / ￥760
Believe it or not, in this bowl is just one really long and thick Udon noodle. Texture is chewy and has good elasticity, a sign of a good Udon noodle. Notice the flavorful broth exhibiting perfect tint of color giving impact even though the bowl itself is simple. Add the grated ginger according to taste. This single Udon noodle will be one of highlights of your trip in Kyoto.
Oyako Don / ￥960
Oyako Don, is chicken, egg, and some vegetables topped on bed or rice. Look for “Chicken and egg meal on the rice” on the English menu. The bowl of Oyako Don comes with side of Udon. Along with the Udon, Oyako Don contains a wonderful flavor of dashi (flavorful stock) as well.
Manjyu / ￥280 per one Manjyu
The nearby Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is known for the god of education, and a shrine that many people visit to wish their success in studies. This Manjyu (a Japanese confection containing sweet red bean) sold at Tawaraya is dedicated to bring luck for acceptance in schools. On the Manjyu is the writing representing “pass” in hopes for students passing entrance exams. *The special manju are only available between October and April.
