Story & Recommendation
The first tea house in Japan to offer "Royal Milk Tea"
Lipton is a long-established tea house known to everyone in Kyoto. Lipton’s main store has been in business since 1930, when there were still few black tea drinkers in Japan, and has continued to convey the authentic London black tea culture to the people of Kyoto. Lipton offers not only high-quality teas and cakes, but also dishes such as morning sets, lunch, and dinner with a traditional English twist. Expertly qualified tea masters select the tea that goes best with each dish and cake, so you can enjoy the combination to the fullest.
Adjacent to Kyoto Station, it is convenient for sightseeing and shopping before or after your visit. Although it can get crowded at times, the store, modeled after an authentic British store, has a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a cup of tea in a leisurely manner.

Royal milk tea
/ ¥820 (Inc. tax)
Lipton is the birthplace of "Royal Milk Tea". The rich milk tea made by boiling black tea leaves with hot water and milk was named "Royal Milk Tea" and has become a particularly popular milk tea in Japan. The method of making it is still carefully passed down and each cup is carefully brewed and served at this store. The milk used is from Kyoto. After trying various types of milk, Kyoto milk was chosen because it was the most compatible with black tea. It is moderately sweet when drunk as is, but the store recommends sweetening it with plenty of sugar. The more sweetened it is, the more delicious the tea becomes.

English breakfast
/ ¥1,700 (Inc. tax)
The English Breakfast, a recreation of a typical British sumptuous breakfast, is available only between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. Coffee or tea is included, and Ceylon tea is served for black tea.
White beans, grilled tomatoes, and other classic British dishes are served with toast. Bread from a Kyoto bakery "Yoshida Pan Kobo" is used for the sandwiches too. It is a little hard, but the crust of the bread is soft.
The Ceylon tea in the set is characterized by moderate astringency. The manager says it helps to shed fat, so it goes well with a hearty English breakfast.

British Victoria Cake Set
/ ¥1,500 (Inc. tax)
British Victoria Cake Set includes a Victoria Cake and Dimbula Tea. Lipton's Victoria Cake features a sponge cake sandwiched between buttercream and yuzu jam. Victoria cakes are often filled with raspberry jam, but this store uses jam made from yuzu citrus from Mizuo, Kyoto, which is considered the birthplace of yuzu cultivation. The slightly bitter and refreshing flavor of yuzu blends well with the elegant aroma of Dimbula tea.
How to Order
The English menu is written below the Japanese menu. If you would like a cake from the showcase at the front of the restaurant, just ask the staff and they will bring it to your table. Cakes can be taken out and confectionaries are available for sale.
- Order Tips -
For teas other than royal milk tea, wait one minute after being served to let it steep before pouring it into a teacup.
