Come in for a light snack in this tea room with high quality essence of Wakuden
Wakuden restaurants serve high quality Japanese cuisine in four branches throughout Kyoto. Started as a Ryokan, or Japanese style inn, Wakuden now branches out to serving traditional Japanese cuisine in different styles. One is this tea room located on the second floor of the Wakuden shop (Omotase) on Sakaimachi Street. The Chakaseki, or the tea room, is equipped with quality furniture for people to spend a calm tea time. Wakuden provides several small eats in the Sakaimachi Branch opposed to full meals at Wakuden restaurants. The tea room emits the ambience of calm Japanese style cafe.
Zenzai Nabe (Red Bean Hot Pot) / ￥1,080
Zenzai or sweet red bean with mochi is served in a hot pot served bubbling hot. Often eaten during the New Year seasons, Zenzai is only offered during winter period. Zenzai is a popular item during tea times especially for satisfying sweet cravings. Side of sea kelps served along Zenzai balance out the sweetness of the red beans.
Anago Ochazuke / ￥1,300
Anago or salt water eel is on top of a bowl of rice for hot tea to be poured on for this Ochazuke dish. Ochazuke, a common dish perfect for a light meal, is regularly enjoyed by people of Japan at any time of the day. The name, Ochazuke, literally means “put in tea”. The eel are seasoned strongly to be a perfect match with plain white rice and hot tea. The dish is served with some crunchy pickles which are also a specialty item of Kyoto. Ochazuke dishes also come with Wakuden’s famous gelatinous sweets called “Seiko” wrapped in leaves.
Black Bean / Free
After being seated down, the server will bring some tea and a starter of black beans. These are a particular type of black beans that are small in size but quite flavorful. Sugar coating give them some added crunch and sweetness. These make healthy snacks and are also available for purchase in the first floor.
