Sobanomi Yoshimura is a really popular soba restaurant in Kyoto where you can enjoy freshly made soba noodles made by soba chefs
Sobanomi Yoshimura is famous for their good selection of sake, and freshly made, proper soba noodles. The restaurant is located on Gojo-dori Street, close to subway Gojo station. The machiya town house style of the place stands out prominently among the modern office buildings of Gojo-dori Street. This restaurant chain has four restaurants in Kyoto, the main one in Arashiyama, one close to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one in Kitayama, and then this restaurant on Gojo-dori Street. This restaurant is famous home and abroad, and many tourists keep coming to this restaurant, to taste the great soba and Kyoto-like atmosphere. During peak times there is often a line in front of the restaurant. At this popular restaurant, Sobanomi Yoshimura, I would like you to experience the combination of soba and sake. There are 28 soba chefs currently working in Sobanomi Yoshimura, and they make the soba by hand every day. The soba made under their strict quality control is always fresh and fragrant. Sobanomi Yoshimura in Gojo is open until 10 p.m. so many people use the restaurant as an izakaya pub. They have sake and an a la carte menu of dishes made of soba, so you can enjoy sake and side dishes before you eat soba noodles, “sobayanomi” style. You don’t need to worry when visiting this restaurant because many tourists visit this place the restaurant staff can speak English. Sobanomi Yoshimura in the middle of Kyoto in Gojo is a place where you can have sake and good soba noodles, and the place is my recommendation.

This is Sobanomi Yoshimura’s most popular item. This set has sashimi, tempura, cold soba on a bamboo sieve, wild vegetable soba, and soba ice cream to top it all. A luxurious set. You can have the wild vegetable soba hot or cold. It’s fun to taste this many Japanese dishes at one time. There is a lot to eat in this set so this should be enough even for those who normally might think a bowl of soba is not enough. *This set is not available during lunch time.

Soba-nabe/Soba hotpot

Soba hotpot is rare even in Japan. This hotpot is eaten with sobagaki, buckwheat dough balls, and other ingredients, and the last part of the experience is throwing in some soba noodles and finishing with them, drinking the soup like with shabushabu. You get two types of noodles, thick and thin ones. The taste of the soup is strong with a nice dashi kick, and there are many ingredients for you to put into the hotpot, so I am sure you will be satisfied. You get roasted buckwheat berries with the hotpot so I recommend sprinkling some on the hotpot which makes it more fragrant. *This dish cannot be ordered during lunch time. *The soba hotpot is on the menu starting from March 2017.

How to Order


The restaurant has menus in English, both simplified and traditional Chinese, and Korean. The menus also have pictures of the dishes so it’s easy to order.  

- Order Tips -
The restaurant is really popular with locals and tourists so during lunch and dinner peak times you might have to wait. If you have to wait you can watch the soba chefs make soba in a soba-making room on the first floor. They knead the dough and then cut it to thin slices with a kitchen knife. The sight of soba chefs making soba noodles in a soba noodle-making room is a sight you won’t see every day. Seeing the soba chefs at their delicate work is a precious experience so I’m sure you will be moved. Many people just pick up their cameras without thinking. Let’s wait to get into the restaurant while watching soba chefs at work!
