Dragon Burger offers Japanese-style burgers in the heart of Kyoto close to Tofuku-ji Temple
Dragon Burger just opened close to Tofuku-ji Temple in September 2017. The restaurant offers burgers that use local ingredients grown in Kyoto, like the famous tsukemono-pickles of Kyoto, which normally are not found on a burger, but eaten with rice. These interesting taste-combinations are supervised by the two-time Slider Decider winner Adam Rawson, the former head chef of the London restaurant Pachama. What separates this restaurant from others is not only that their burgers are delicious, but also the beautiful, Japanese interior of the restaurant. Dragon Burger is in a renovated Kyoto town house, and even though the restaurant specializes in burgers, the atmosphere is very Japanese. And not to forget the great selection of wines this restaurant boasts; it’s probably one of the only burger places in the world where you can have Opus One with your burger and fries!
Cacao BBQ Burger
Cacao BBQ Burger / ¥1,300
When you hear that the burger contains cacao, you may think that it’s going to be sweet. But it’s not. There is just a slight hint of cacao in the taste, and the slight sweetness helps bring out the juicy flavor of the burger patty.
Samurai Burger
Samurai Burger / ¥1,200
You have a whole manganji togarashi pepper slicing the burger in half, and death sauce to challenge even the bravest of men. This burger packs quite a punch, but it is the choice for those who feel like they have it in them to become the last samurai.
Wasabi Burger
3Let's Try!
Wasabi Burger / ¥1,100 for the burger
The wasabi of this Wasabi Burger is not very strong, so it mainly works as a spice that makes the beef patty taste even better. You also have seaweed under the patty, and as we all know, seaweed is packed with umami. If you want the burger with the most umami, have the Wasabi Burger. In the picture, you can see the Wasabi Burger with onion rings, coleslaw, and a drink. This set costs 1,500 yen during lunch time, but if you want it with homemade fried potatoes you can get it for 1,300 yen.
Matcha ice cream sandwich
4Let's Try!
Matcha ice cream sandwich / ¥500
After a burger, you’ll probably want a desert. And what better dessert is there to have than matcha? This matcha ice cream sandwich is not that sweet, and in fact, the buns are not sweet at all. Often traditional Japanese sweets which contain red bean paste can be overly sweet, but this matcha ice cream sandwich has just the right amount of sweetness to it.

Finding a good burger in Japan is difficult. Most of the burger places here just get something wrong, but contrary to this, Dragon Burger gets a lot right. Maybe it’s because they have Adam Rawson supervising the recipes, but all of the burgers seemed to just work. The dishes here could almost be called fusion cuisine in how Kyoto-like they taste. If you want a burger near Tofuku-ji Temple, you don’t have to think twice where to go to.
