Story & Recommendation
Matcha desserts arranged to be a garden in bowl
Turn left after the Keifuku Electric Railroad “Arashiyama station” and you will see the entrance to eXCAFE right in front of you. This café offers a wide range of original Japanese sweets, most of which are made with Matcha (Japanese green tea). The Kyoto Kuro Matcha roll cake, which is one of the café’s most popular desserts, is a sponge cake made with bamboo charcoal paste. We also highly recommend the green tea Soba carbonara! It’s not as crazy as you think, so please give it a try, because it’s totally worth it! Both of things mentioned above, as well as other dishes, has been carefully arranged to mimic the look of a Japanese garden on the plate. There are also real Japanese gardens that you can look out upon from the cafe, which are carefully cleaned by the staff every day. The garden you can look out on differs according to the table you sit at. You will receive a warm welcome by the Kimono wearing staff as well, so sit back, relax and make yourself comfortable with the Japanese traditional instrumental music playing in the background.

Kyoto Kuro Maru Matcha
Kyoto Kuro Maru Matcha with drink / ¥1,540 (Inc.tax)
The Kyoto Kuro Maru Matcha is a black sponge cake made with bamboo charcoal with natural matcha creamed in the center. It has a wonderfully delicate flavor, and features the very healthy – or so believed in Japan –bamboo charcoal pasta. It is arranged on a beautiful golden plate to mimic that of a Japanese garden, making the cake look even more marvelous. This dessert also pairs great with Matcha green tea.

Tenryu-ji Parfait
Tenryu-ji Parfait / ¥1,650 (Inc. tax)
The Tenryu-ji Parfait looks like the garden in the Tenryu-ji Temple. The huge scoops of Matcha and Hojicha (roasted green tea) ice cream are sure to satisfy your appetite. And if that wasn’t enough, these ice creams even use organic tea leaves. Enjoy the taste with Matcha, soft and gooey warabimochi, and seasonal Japanese sweets all in one eye catching bowl.

Green tea Soba Carbonara
Green tea Soba Carbonara with drink / ¥1,700 with drink (Inc.tax)
Green soba noodles in a carbonara is not something you see everyday, is it? However, despite its bizarre looks, this dish tastes absolutely fantastic! In classic carbronara fashion, this dish contains bacons and raw egg. As you eat it the recognizable flavor of the soba noodles will be accompanied by the flavors of the delicious savory sauce. If you are Soba lover, you have to try it! This dish comes along with 3 toppings of cheese, Japanese pickles, and salted kelp. Try adding them as you please to change and enjoy different flavors.
4Let's Try!
“HOKU-HOKU” Odango Set
“HOKU-HOKU” Odango Set / ¥1,650 (Inc.tax)
With this set you can grill these skewered balls of white and green Japanese mugwort mochi balls yourself. After grilling the dango mochi balls, you can dip them in the mitarashi sweet soy sauce or coarse sweet red bean paste. Both of these sauces go perfectly with the dango. The mitarashi is thick and the red bean paste is not too sweet. It’s also nice that you can adjust the cooking time yourself. The dango, of course, taste delicious, but getting the opportunity to gril them yourself is also incredibly fun too, which is why I recommend this dango set.
