Enjoy all-you-can-eat Kyoto-style home cooking and sweets at Gyatei
If you have been to Arashiyama during lunch time, you have probably seen a long line of people waiting to get to eat at Gyatei, maybe the most famous buffet-style restaurant in the Arashiyama area. They offer over 30 different types of dishes, like yudofu, namafu wheat gluten, chirashi (scattered) sushi, deep-fried pork cutlets, curry, and on the dessert side: warabimochi, pudding, and other sweets. The dishes change seasonally, and they have great, tasty dishes for each of the four seasons of Japan. There is often a line in front of the restaurant, but I’m sure that their dishes are worth the wait. Time to taste some Kyoto-style home cooking!

Over 30 dishes, and when you see them lined up like this, I’m sure you’ll start feeling like some tofu. They have pumpkin, Japanese omelet, tempura, pork cutlets, and even fried chicken. The Kyoto-favorite namafu wheat gluten is especially worth a mention, not every place has it. The dishes here are made by the great chefs of the Japanese-style hotel, or ryokan, Arashiyama Bentei, so they, of course, taste great. I’m sure you’ll leave this restaurant satisfied.
Arashiyama classic: yudofu
Arashiyama classic: yudofu
Yudofu means boiled tofu, and while it may not sound that special, the creaminess of it is something you’ll remember long after eating it. By topping it with the restaurant’s special sauce, green onion, and ginger, you’ll take the taste to a completely new level. If you go to Arashiyama, this is one Kyoto specialty you definitely have to try, and at Gyatei you get to eat as much as you want of it!
Curry rice
3Let's Try!
Curry rice
Curry rice is the soul food of Japan, and you can taste it at Gyatei too. The potatoes and carrots in it have sucked up the spicy flavors, and have become really flavorful. Take some rice and pour some curry on it, and you have a tasty plate of curry rice. If you want to make your curry rice even better, top it with some deep fried pork cutlet.
Pudding in a huge bowl
4Let's Try!
Pudding in a huge bowl
This pudding is in a big bowl, and even if you’re already feeling full, I’d like to recommend you still try this pudding. The pudding is topped with burnt caramel sauce that tastes just wonderful. And next to it you have whipped cream! Is there any dessert better than this after some yudofu?
