Story & Recommendation
Enjoy fresh, seasonal fruit at its very best at Fruit & Café Hosokawa in Kyoto’s Shimogamo area
Fruit & Café Hosokawa is a famous fruit parlor in Kyoto, located close to Shimogamo Shrine. The specialty of this place is that they offer fruit at its very best ripeness, at its sweetest. Their menu lets you enjoy the deliciousness of the fruits themselves and contains such classics as their famous fruit sandwich, but you can also have fruit parfaits, cakes, and juice here too. Their fruit sandwich is so popular and famous that many people come from other faraway cities in Japan to Hosokawa in order to taste it. They also have seasonal fruit sandwiches which I’d like to also recommend. You can have the fruit sandwich here at the café, or you can have one to go and enjoy it while you enjoy sightseeing at Shimogamo Shrine.
Fruit sandwich / ¥1,100 ＋ tax
Pineapple, papaya, banana, strawberry, and melon: all that in this one sandwich! Hosokawa’s popular fruit sandwich is not too sweet, but it lets you enjoy the taste of the fruits themselves. This is something you definitely have to order if you come to Hosokawa.
Berry sandwich / ￥1,100 ＋ tax
The berry sandwich is also one of the more popular menu items at Fruit & Café Hosokawa. It contains strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, and handmade berry jam, not forgetting the whipped cream. The jam goes very well with the berries. This sandwich offers a different, but an equally sweet alternative to the fruit sandwich.
Rose Parfait / ¥1,000 ＋ tax
The classic parfait at Hosokawa is this, Rose Parfait. It contains kiwi fruit, pineapple, apple, orange, strawberry, and blueberry: altogether seven different fruits! This is a luxurious parfait, just as expected from a fruit parlor.
Mixed fruit juice / ￥800 ＋ tax
The mixed fruit at Hosokawa contains cantaloupe, banana, apple, orange, and pineapple. You can taste the true sweetness and umami of the fruits in this juice.
How to Order
The menu is only in English, but it has pictures of the parfaits and fruit sandwiches so choosing is easy.

They also sell high-quality fruit at the shop, which is rare in Kyoto.
