Chinese medicine and spices! Yakuzen curry in Kyoto
Hyakumi Onjiki is a restaurant a short walk from subway Gojo Station where you can eat yakuzen curry. There is a depth to the taste of the blend of Chinese medicine and spices in the curry, and the spiciness of it will make you sweat a bit. The restaurant is very particular about using local, seasonal produce. It’s nice to get to taste seasonal flavors. The restaurant is in a renovated machiya townhouse and has a nice Japanese-chic atmosphere. Enjoy your curry at your own pace.
Kyoto yakuzen curry

Kyoto yakuzen curry / ¥1,200 (+tax)
This vividly colored Kyoto yakuzen curry contains over 12 types of local Kyoto vegetables. It contains a lot of seasonal vegetables and is very healthy. You can enjoy the change in the textures of the vegetables, as depending on the vegetables, some of them are fried, while others are boiled, to let you enjoy the best texture. The red peppers on top of the curry are actually pink peppercorn and bring a nice accent to the taste.
Keema curry with fried pork cutlet

Keema curry with fried pork cutlet / ¥1,300 (+tax)
There is a luxurious, 180-gram piece of Japanese fried pork cutlet on top of the curry. The taste of the crunchy fried pork cutlet is not too strong and goes well with the curry. The keema curry is even spicier than the yakuzen curry, and the minced meat brings a nice meatiness to the taste.
Aigake curry
3Let's Try!
Aigake curry / ¥800 (+tax)
Half of this curry is yakuzen, and the other half is keema. You can enjoy the differences in the tastes of the curries. This is great for those who want to eat both yakuzen and keema curry.

At this curry restaurant, you can feel “Kyoto-likeness” everywhere. I was most surprised by the modern atmosphere of the Japanese room inside the renovated machiya townhouse; not something you usually see at a curry restaurant. The curry is made from a special blend of many spices – authentic! The ingredients are local and the taste delicious. If you want to enjoy curry at your own pace in Kyoto I recommend this restaurant!

Hyakumi Onjiki is a curry restaurant in Kyoto that specializes in spicy curry that is a sub-genre of Japanese curry. This type of spicy curry is known as "spice curry" in Japan, and as you can probably guess from its name, it's rather spicy. But for those who like spicy Japanese curry, Hyakumi Onjiki is an ideal place to go to when in Kyoto. The curry is spicy and hot, but it still has that delicious taste of Japanese curry we have all come to know and love.
