In the soup is a restaurant and bar hidden on the 9th floor of a building in Gion
On the 9th floor of a building close to the kabuki theater of Kyoto, Minamiza, you can find a restaurant/bar offering New York style dishes called in the Soup. Inside the restaurant, it feels like you had left Japan, and were in New York: the analog TV and LP player of the restaurant only make this more pronounced. The night view from the 9th floor is incredible, making this place the perfect choice for couples or a girls’ night out. The most famous dish of the restaurant is their trippa, tripe with beans in a tomato sauce, combining Italian and traditional American influences into a beautiful, delicious package. They also have a good selection of alcoholic beverages, but I liked their sparkling sake the best! Gion is full of traditional Japanese restaurants, but if you want something a bit more different, a bit more romantic, you could try In the Soup and their Instagram-ready dishes.
Trippa / ￥700 (+tax)
Trippa is an Italian dish made from cow tripe, and it’s the dish this restaurant is famous for. The tripe served here is absolutely beautiful, and even the smell is pleasant. This is a great starting point for those who have not yet tried offal dishes. The trippa is stewed for a long time, and the taste of the tomatoes is sucked up by the tripe. When you also get the chickpeas into the dish, it turns into something that goes perfectly with a glass of wine.
Hamburg steak in flames / ￥1,500 (+tax)
This Hamburg steak is made from pork and beef, and some spices. Simple, but soft and delicious. On top of the steak you have rosemary, and the special thing happens after you’re served the steak. The staff will put a lighter to the rosemary, and in a flash your steak is on fire, making this the absolute best Hamburg steak possible for Instagram. The Hamburg steak is juicy, and quite big, so there’s not only a lot to see here, but also to eat.
Alcoholic beverages / ￥600 (+tax) and up
At the restaurant/bar they have many different kinds of alcoholic beverages available, but my recommendation would have to be the bubbly sake Tegumi. The taste is on the dry side, but it goes really well with foods that are a bit greasy, because it’s quite refreshing. This is the favorite of the restaurant's female customers. Besides their selection of wines is excellent, and some of them, like this in the picture, are only available for a limited time, so be sure to ask for their recommendation of the day.
Tandoori chicken and prosciutto salad with mango / ￥1,500 (+tax)
It may be a bit surprising to see Indian tandoori chicken together with Serrano ham and mango, but believe me: the combination just works. Only by cutting the chicken can you truly appreciate the juiciness of it. You don’t often see a whole chicken leg like this, so take this rare chance and bite into it!
How to Order
Even though the staff cannot speak English, there is some English on the menu so you should be able to order.
