- けずりひや -
Kezurihiya is a Japanese shaved ice café located underground in Gion
Located on the busy shopping street of Shijo-dori in Gion, this Japanese shaved ice café is located a bit hidden on the basement floor of the APA HOTEL. When you take the stairs downstairs by the hotel restaurant, you get to a place that feels old fashioned, not like a café offering shaved ice. And actually, this place is a bar at night and only a shaved ice café by day. This rather popular shaved ice café is, of course, most famous for its shaved ice. What differentiates their shaved ice from others is that it is almost as soft as snowflakes and it melts right in your mouth. Choosing the taste is easy, they have three different tastes: matcha, hojicha tea, and black tea, and each can be made into a set with a drink. They have different latte art-like designs on top of the shaved ice, and the designs change seasonally, but they, of course, have Kyoto-classics like maiko and Yasaka Pagoda designs too. These cute designs are rather nice, and there is condensed milk in the shaved ice, so you can tell why this place is so popular. They also offer takeout so you can eat some shaved ice and walk around Kyoto.
Matcha shaved ice set with a drink

The shaved ice with condensed milk is made with a special machine that makes the ice feel as soft as lightly fallen snow, and on top of it, there is matcha powder in the shape of the famous sightseeing spots of Kyoto or of seasonal images. If you just take a spoonful of it, you will get to enjoy the snow-like ice and the sweet-but-bitter taste of the matcha both at the same time. The cute earthenware-bowl the shaved ice is on can also be bought from the café as a souvenir.

Hojicha is not a usual taste for shaved ice, but it is a really Japanese one. The roasted hojicha tea has a fragrant smell and the sweetness of the condensed milk brings out the gentle taste of Japanese tea. During the cherry blossom season, there is a picture of a cherry tree in full bloom on the top of the shaved ice, and the gentle taste of it should also be great for children.

The three tastes can all be had for takeout too, and in the picture, you can see black tea shaved ice. The Earl Grey shaved ice with condensed milk makes the shaved ice taste like milk tea. Because there are so many tourists in Gion, they also offer takeout so you can look at the sightseeing spots while you eat shaved ice. They very kindly also put a piece of cardboard tube on the plastic cup so that your hands won’t get wet. On a hot summer day, this would be perfect!
How to Order

They have a simple menu in English. They have three tastes: matcha, hojicha, and black tea, and two drink choices: coffee or tea (both hot and cold).

- Order Tips -

After choosing your taste, you choose your drink, and with the drink set, you also get a Japanese sweet. If you want takeout, it takes around 5-minutes to make the shaved ice, so if you are going to leave the café when waiting for the shaved ice, tell the staff first.

The cute latte art like shaved ice art will make you want to take many pictures! The taste of the shaved ice is special, it melts right in your mouth, but it is also not too sweet but refreshing. If you come to Kyoto, you have to have matcha, but I personally would like to recommend the black tea one. This Earl Grey tasting shaved ice with condensed milk is a treat! If you are in Gion, remember to get some shaved ice!
