Khaos Spice-Diner

- カオス スパイスダイナー -
Ultimate spice curry whose varied ingredients blend together in your mouth
Khaos Spice Diner is a popular restaurant in Osaka that opened in Kyoto in July 2017. The chef of the restaurant, who is knowledgeable of Japanese cuisine, said to me, “All soups can be made into curry,” and the “spice curry” here is done by frying spices on high heat to make the taste stand out, and then Japanese dashi stock is added to make the curry taste unique. They offer three types of curry, the main one being their “Khaos keema.” The other two curries change weekly based on what kind of an inspiration the chef gets that week. The three types of curries served on one plate look chaotic – but the taste of each of them stands out on its own. The ceiling is high and a lot of light enters the spacious restaurant from the skylight. On the wall, they have rare books and artwork from foreign countries, and the restaurant feels like a chic café. Khaos Spice Diner is located in a busy area of Kyoto popular among young people. There is also a movie theatre close by, so this is a great place for lunch either before or after you go see a blockbuster.
Khaos keema / One type of curry: ¥900
This is their classic keema curry, made using their special spice blend. This is a “spice curry” that mixes spiciness with the umami of Japanese dashi stock, mixing western and Japanese influences.
Three types of curry / ¥1,150
You can enjoy the curries that change weekly all on one plate. In front of the rice mound (about the size of a fist), you have three types of curry and side dishes. The three curries taste completely different, and as you eat them, you get to enjoy different tastes. Mix some side dishes into the curry to change the flavor up a bit.
3Let's Try!
Spicy egg topping / ¥100
This is a soft boiled egg marinated in spicy oil. The egg yolk mellows the refreshing spiciness of the curry. You can choose when to break the egg into the curry, and enjoy the chance in taste it brings forth.
How to Order

Khaos Spice-Diner menu

They have the menu in English and Chinese, and sometimes have staff that can speak some simple English, so you don’t have to worry about ordering. You can choose the rice from white, turmeric, and a blend of these two types.

- Order Tips -

If you have allergies or are vegetarian, ask the staff and they will try to help you. The area around the restaurant is busy and the restaurant is in a narrow alley with many restaurants neighboring it. Look for the orange sign and climb up the stairs.

The unique spicy curry goes together with a beer perfectly.
