M4 in Kyoto offers an unlikely combination of beer and guns
M4 is a bar in Kyoto with an unlikely theme for the peace-loving city of Kyoto: guns & beer. At this bar you get to shoot airsoft guns and drink beer, so it’s all safe but still fun. The bar is located in an alley you can access from the Teramachi Shopping Street, but it’s on the third floor, so keep your eyes out when looking for it. Once you get in, you are greeted by neon lights and a huge array of guns on the walls of the bars. You can also survey pin-up girls holding guns and the shooting range, where you actually get to shoot the airsoft guns. The system at the bar goes as follows: they have a cover charge of 200 yen, a gun-safety lesson for 300 yen, you get to shoot the guns for 600-700 yen for 25 shots, and the drinks are around 650 yen a pop. Simple and enjoyable.
Get a drink

Get a drink / ¥600 and up
First things first, the theme of the bar is beer and guns, so of course you should start your night with a drink. They have a nice selection of cocktails and liquors for you to choose from, not to forget the beer. The drink in the picture is vodka Red Bull, but note that you have to pay 70 yen extra for the Red Bull. You also get some simple snacks to go with your drink which is quite nice.
Shoot a gun

Shoot a gun / ¥600-700 for 25 shots
It’s not every day that you drink some vodka and go shoot a gun afterward. And this in the culture-capital of Japan, Kyoto! So first, before you get to shoot, you have to learn about gun safety from the staff. Then you get your goggles and gloves, and after this, you are handed the gun. After you have been taught the correct way to hold the gun, you get the magazine with the airsoft pellets, and then you get to shoot. Afterward, you get to see whether you hit anything.
The cracker challenge

The cracker challenge / ¥500
If you’d so wish, you can also partake in the cracker challenge for the low price of 500 yen. You need to finish six crackers in 60 seconds, and if you do this, you get two drink tickets. And if you lose, you still get to eat crackers, so this game offers a true win-win situation.
How to Order

Listen carefully when the staff tells you about gun safety and the correct way to hold a gun. It’s all really interesting.

It’s hard to choose between a handgun and a rifle, so how about trying them both?

This place is something you visit at night when the temples of Kyoto have shut their doors. There is not so much to do in Kyoto at night, so this bar fills that hole nicely. You get to shoot all kinds of guns and drink beer, so the bar really is an escape from everyday life. You are allowed to smoke inside and the bar is not that big, so it’s maybe not the best choice for those who don’t like cigarette smoke.

This was something new for me, as I had never fired an airsoft gun before, and I also found it a bit scary before trying. It was really cool getting to hold the gun; I felt like a heroine from a Hollywood movie! You can also try your shooting skills against the boss of the establishment, so if you are looking for fun things to do at night in Kyoto, this bar is a nice choice.
