Story & Recommendation
Famous for its delicious egg sandwich, La Madrague inherits the traditions of the old cafes of Kyoto
You can find La Madrague in a residential area, a 10-minute walk away from subway Karasuma Oike Station and close to Nijo Castle. Before La Madrague, Café Seven was at its place, operating for around 50-years, starting in the year 1963. La Madrague was started here to respect the dying wishes of the owner of Café Seven, and so La Madrague’s atmosphere, to this day, reminds one of the Showa period of Japanese history when Café Seven was in business.
When introducing La Madrague, you cannot forget their famous egg sandwich. This egg sandwich is made in the same way as the egg sandwiches of the famous Kyoto restaurant Corona, unfortunately no longer in business, were made. La Madrague’s egg sandwich is truly a delicacy, and it brings back to life the egg sandwich of Korona. Many people visit this café just to try this sandwich.
Besides their sandwich, La Madrague also offers many yoshoku-style dishes, meaning that the dishes here are a combination of western and Japanese influences like their Japanese ketchup-Napolitan pasta served on a hot plate. The dishes you enjoy in the retro-stylish atmosphere of the café are all nostalgic and have a gentle taste to them. La Madrague is a great Japanese café that makes sure that the traditions of “kissaten-style” cafés are kept alive.
