Marugami offers you a chance to try Kobe beef for a very reasonable price in hitsumabushi-style
Do you want to try Kobe beef in Kyoto without having to pay around 10,000 yen for it? Then you should consider Marugami; a restaurant right there in the heart of Kyoto, near Shijo Station, by Shijo Street. The Kobe beef here is served in an interesting Japanese style that is normally reserved for eel: hitsumabushi. Hitsumabushi is a kind of rice bowl that is eaten in three different ways. First, you’re supposed to divide your hitsumabushi into three parts of equal size. Then you have the first part without adding anything to it. Then the second part you have with some condiments, like tsukemono pickles. The third and last part you have with dashi stock, making it a completely different experience. If you don’t think you can remember all that when eating your Kobe beef Hitsumabushi, don’t worry: at Marugami they have instructions on how to eat it in English.

Uni means sea urchin, and usually, you get to eat uni at sushi restaurants. But why only have uni with sushi? At Marugami you can enjoy the creamy taste of uni with Kobe beef! Just note that this delicacy is limited to five portions a day.

The meat was tender, and the experience great for the price you’re paying. You often have to pay quite a lot in order to just get to taste a morsel of Kobe beef, so it was a very nice thing to get a rice bowl-full of this famed delicacy.
