Story & Recommendation
Gion Moriwaki is a restaurant where you can enjoy all aspects of kaiseki dining
Gion Moriwaki just opened in the southern Gion area, which is full of fancy restaurants, in 2014. From outside, the restaurant looks simple, and if it didn’t have its dividing curtains on the door you might mistake it for someone’s house. The owner-chef of the restaurant has trained at some of the best Japanese restaurants and hotels in Kyoto, and this can easily be seen the dishes he makes; they look incredible, and even though the chef uses some very luxurious ingredients the prices of the courses are quite reasonable. The counter of the restaurant is made from a cherry tree, and on it, you’re served seasonal dishes which reflect the change of seasons in Kyoto perfectly. This restaurant is very welcoming for firstcomers when you think of the area it is located in, and it’s great for both lunch and dinner, and also for those who have not had kaiseki before. The restaurant takes pride in their kaiseki cuisine and its Japanese taste and the taste of the dashi they use.

For dinner, they have the 7,000 yen course, 10,000 yen course, and 13,000 yen course. They only have 10 seats, six at the counter and four at the table, so making a reservation is recommended. Handmade soba noodles
Handmade soba noodles
The owner-chef of Gion Moriwaki takes grade pride in the restaurants famous “last dish of the day” which for this restaurant is not white rice, but soba noodles. Before opening the restaurant, the owner-chef happened to find an excellent type of buckwheat, which he now uses to make the noodles. First, eat some of the noodles as-is, then add some salt to them, and lastly dip them into the dipping sauce.

Eating at the counter made from a cherry tree
You can see the thought that has gone into the interior of the restaurant. The counter made from a cherry tree is an especially majestic sight, and it’s something that helps you get away from the mundane and into the beautiful Japanese atmosphere of Moriwaki. From these seats, you get to see up close how the owner-chef works his magic.
