Story & Recommendation
Enjoy a variety of fresh healthy vegetable dishes at mumokuteki café
Mumokuteki café is located in the bustling Teramachi shopping street of Kyoto. The first floor is full of interesting zakka (interesting miscellaneous things) and has a high ceiling. But on the second floor, there is a café where you can have guilt-free vegetarian dishes, which are not only healthy but also tasty. The ingredients are organic so you can be sure that your food is healthy. The restaurant offers Japanse-style fried chicken and fried pork cutlets, only they don’t contain any meat – instead, they’re made from tofu dregs and glutinous rice cakes. You also get rice or multigrain rice and a salad with your main dish. In addition, the café is so spacious it’s also great for the whole family to dine out together. If you want to have a healthy meal when traveling in Kyoto, come to mumokuteki café!

Tofu Skin Omurice
Tofu Skin Omurice / ¥ 1500 (incl. tax)
As the name suggests, this tofu skin omelet has the texture of egg and goes brilliantly with the thick demi-glace sauce. The secret behind the sauce’s deep richness lines in the addition of corn and pumpkin as natural sweeteners. Tofu skin is made from soybeans making it naturally extremely healthy. This dish doesn’t sit heavy in your stomach after eating either, so is the perfect dish to enjoy before heading out to sightsee and walking a lot.

This set meal includes 3 main dishes, 4 side dishes, rice and miso soup. The tofu hamburger in a rich demi-glace sauce, soy sauce-based fried soy pulp Konnyaku with a meat-like texture, cutlets with homemade miso, and side dishes of seasonal vegetables are all very satisfying. Organic rice from the café’s own farm has been polished at 50%.

Homemade Red Shiso Juice
Homemade Red Shiso Juice / ¥650 (Inc. Tax)
One of the popular items at mumokuteki, the Homemade Red Shiso Juice. Although not overly sweet, you can still enjoy the pleasant aroma of the shiso. The sweet and sour flavors of the raspberries and blueberries pair great with the shiso, and the refreshing fizziness of the soda will have you reaching for another. The Homemade Red Shiso Juice is a hidden signature dish at mumokuteki which boasts its fair number of hardcore fans.
