Story & Recommendation
Shikisai Shiori – Seasonal dishes on the banks of the Kamogawa River
Shikisai Shiori is a restaurant located inside a charming traditional Kyoto townhouse that overlooks the Kamogawa River. After taking your shoes off and heading inside, you’ll be met with a spacious modern yet traditionally Japanese dining area. As the name shiki, meaning the four seasons, would imply, various aspects of Kyoto’s beautiful four seasons can be felt through the restaurant. One of these aspects is, of course, the food. With the desire to highlight the colors of the seasons through their dishes, and also paying particular mind to sourcing locally, Shikisai Shiori uses solely Kyoto kyoyasai vegetables from Kyoto-based contracted farmers. Even the meat used is high-quality beef from the famous Fushimi butchery “Nakaseii.” Another aspect of Shikisai Shiori that showcases Kyoto’s distinct seasons is the restaurant’s actual space. While each season provides the restaurant with different views of Kyoto, Spring brings magnificent views of the cherry blossoms that line the Takasegawa River and from May to September, Summer gives you a view of Kamogawa River from the restaurant’s riverside terrace. If you’re early enough and a little lucky, then you’ll be shown to a seat with views of the Kamogawa and Takasegawa rivers. Paying special attention to the interior as well, Shikisai Shiori also provides patrons with the feeling of each season through their periodically changing art pieces and wall scrolls. With its relaxed atmosphere and incredible views of Kyoto, Shikisai Shiori is the perfect restaurant for special occasions like anniversaries, dates and birthdays.
