SLOW JET COFFEE Kodai-ji

- スロージェットコーヒー 高台寺 -
A cafe where visitors can relax with an aromatic cup of coffee while enjoying the view of Kyoto
SLOW JET COFFEE Kodai-ji is a stylish cafe located in the grounds of Kodai-ji, a temple located about 10 minutes on foot from Gion Shijo Station on the Keihan Line. The interior is designed to blend in with Kodai-ji and provides a warm and distinctly Japanese atmosphere. The "kodai" in Kodai-ji means high ground or hill, and true to its name, the cafe's terrace and window seats look out over the Kyoto cityscape. Guests can enjoy a view of Yasaka Pagoda and other sights unique to Kyoto. Because there are no tall buildings nearby, one can enjoy the freedom of the wide-open space. In this amazing location, enjoy a cup of their carefully brewed, store-roasted coffee, or desserts that make for a little taste of Kyoto such as the matcha parfait. It's the perfect place to relax and take in the sights while sipping a great cup of coffee.
Coffee: Kodai-ji Blend/Espresso

Coffee: Kodai-ji Blend/Espresso / ¥500 / ¥300
As the name implies, there are two types of coffee offered at the café. SLOW COFFEE is a carefully hand dripped cup of their store-roasted blend. JET COFFEE is a rich espresso made using a high speed espresso machine from French company Unic. Of all the available coffees, the Kodai-ji Blend SLOW COFFEE is particularly popular. It's a unique blend of four types of beans from Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, and Tanzania. Special attention has been paid to the blending and roast to keep the acidity and bitterness from getting too strong. It's a coffee that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. On the other hand, the JET COFFEE espresso uses beans that have been roasted in house to go great with milk. The resulting espresso has a concentrated sweetness and a rich aroma.
Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte / ¥600
Blended perfectly with milk, this smooth matcha latte is made from high-grade Kyoto matcha tea and has an amazing aroma. Each latte comes decorated with cute latte art which will put a smile on your face every time (the design changes depending on the day, so it's always a surprise!). There are many great foods and drinks made using matcha in Kyoto, but the unique thing about this cafe is that you can enjoy your latte while taking in the view of Kyoto. It definitely adds to the experience!
Slow Plate

Slow Plate / ¥1,250
*Will no longer be available after this spring This lunch plate includes a main dish, salad, side, bread, and soup. The salad, side, and soup all contain plenty of vegetables, so the amount of food is satisfying and healthy at the same time. It's the perfect amount for a delicious brunch or lunch.
Matcha parfait
4Let's Try!
Matcha parfait / ¥1,200
The matcha parfait is made from ingredients made using Kyoto-grown matcha tea including matcha pudding (made in-house), matcha butter cake, and matcha ice cream. Topping it off is strawberries, sweet beans, and mochi, which gives it a colorful appearance and makes it the perfect desert for any matcha fan. The sweetness of the sweet beans and strawberries perfectly matches with the slight bitterness of the matcha. The chewiness of the mochi, the crunch from the cereal, and the smoothness of the ice cream allows for a variety of interesting textures while enjoying the parfait.

On weekends and holidays my family and I like to visit many different shrines and temples. However, the restaurants that are associated with shrines and temples are often high priced and the quality is not very good, so we often choose to eat somewhere else. At Slow Jet Coffee, the food portions are good, the quality is great, and the view can't be beat. It's a chic place to stop for a little break. If you're out visiting Kyoto's many beautiful temples and shrines with your family, definitely make sure to stop by.

Kodaiji has special night hours during the spring and the fall. After visiting Kodaiji during one of these, I thought to myself "I could go for some tea and a little snack." However, it was almost 9PM, so many of the cafés in the area had already closed. But I stumbled upon this treasure at just the right time. Normally they are only open until 5:30 PM, but during the special night hours they stay open until 10:00 PM (last order is at 9:30). The terrace and window seats have such an amazing view and the view of the city lights at night is incredible! If you're visiting any of the special night openings at Kodaiji or the surrounding temples and shrines please make sure to drop in!

The laid-back atmosphere and chic Japanese interior make this a great place to relax. I had a seat at the kotatsu (heated table), which can't be beat in winter time, and enjoyed my meal while gazing at Yasaka Pagoda. It was a fantastic experience. They open in the morning, so get a cup of their hand drip or espresso and take your time enjoying the coffee and atmosphere. I also recommend the matcha parfait! Not only does it look impressive, it's so tasty! Definitely try it! The cafe is located near Kodaiji, so it's a good place to stop when you've finished sightseeing.
