Story & Recommendation
Starbucks Coffee Uji – a fusion of tradition and nature at the foot of Byodo-in Temple.
Starbucks Coffee Kyoto Uji Byodo-in Omote Sando sits on the road leading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Byodo-in Temple. Even among the plethora of Starbucks in Kyoto, this store manages to stand out from the rest. In Japan, Starbucks, such as the one in Uji, which are located in highly symbolic locations and encompass the history, traditional crafts, culture and products of their localities are known as "Starbucks Regional Landmark Stores." Being one these "Regional Landmark Stores," the Byodo-in Omote Sando Starbucks is packed with Kyoto-esque aspects that help it blend into the surrounding aesthetic of Japan's ancient capital, from a traditional Japanese gabbled roof to a majestic single Japanese pine tree and beautifully tended garden. Furthermore, the receding design of the elongated building apparently represents Kyoto's tradition of reservedness and elegance. Purposefully using low furniture, nearly all seats at this Starbucks provide views of the store's beautiful surroundings. While it may go without saying that the interior is warm and welcoming, there are also plenty of bench seats placed outside the store, too, allowing you to relax with your coffee and get some fresh air while you're at it. While Starbucks is known all around the world, it's precisely this fact that allows them to be able to tap into and showcase the individualities of each specific store's region. Next time you're visiting the Byodo-in Temple, do take the time to drop by this lovely Starbucks. Because we are sure you'll be surprised by what you find inside.

Matcha Latte
Matcha Latte / Short ¥400 / Tall ¥440 / Grande ¥480 / Venti® ¥520
Starbuck’s Matcha Latte is a hot drink of foamy milk and rich matcha green tea. By placing less of an emphasis on sweetness, this drink is able to capture the beautifully rich flavors and aromas of matcha green tea to a T. The mild bitterness of the matcha pairs perfectly with the sweet creaminess of the milk, providing a well-rounded texture and mouthfeel. If you’re looking just to relax and gaze out at the beautiful greenery of the outside Japanese garden, then why not pick yourself up a matcha latte and warm your body and soul while you’re at it.

Matcha Frappuccino / Tall ¥490 / Grande ¥530 / Venti ¥570
While Starbucks’ Frappuccino® have become a worldwide phenomenon, the addition of matcha takes the drink to a whole other level. The texture and refreshing coolness of the crushed ice goes perfectly with the aroma of matcha green tea. Additionally, the whipped cream topping, that gradually melts as you drink, becomes the perfectly mellow peacemaker to all this. As this Matcha Frappuccino is quite sweet and lacks any bitterness from the matcha, it can be a great choice for kids.

How to Order

The food menu also contains a number of limited items, so you might find something here that you've never seen before. Many of these items change seasonally as well, so when you visit, make sure to give the display case a look for yourself. Also, as this part of Uji is very touristy, many of the staff have no problem communicating in English, so you have nothing to worry about.

After placing your order, make sure to check out the artwork hung near the counter. This work was apparently done especially for the Starbucks Coffee Kyoto Uji Byodo-in Omote Sando Store. Local Kyoto lacquer artists coated coffee sacks in lacquer to create a piece that symbolizes the pairing of Kyoto and Starbucks.

Not only that, the piece contains ten hidden rabbits, which is a homage to the myths of the nearby Ujigami Shrine.

While you’re waiting, try and see how many rabbits you can find.
