Story & Recommendation
The long-standing teahouse known as “Anmitsu Tsukigase”
|The establishment of Tsukigase can be traced back to 1926. Originally, the small shop was located in Shijo-kawaramachi, Kyoto and ever since has been serving desserts made from carefully selected ingredients. Tsukigase has three stoers in Kyoto, the head store of Gion honten, sakaimachi-ten, and the Kyoto-takashimaya-ten (in Takashimaya department store), which we introduce in this article. All three stores share the fact that their most popular dish is their anmitsu. This is precisely the reason why the stores are known as “anmitsu-tsukigase.” There’s no need to say, this place has been loved by Kyoto locals and tourists for a long time. Anyway, what exactly is anmitsu? Anmitsu is a Japanese sweet made from Azuki red bean paste topped mitsu-mame jelly. Because of the light flavor of the red bean paste, the anmitsu from Tsukigase has an elegant and refined flavor. The anmitsu is not the only popular dish, Tsukigase also serves shaved ice in the summer, zenzai in the winter, and have a myriad of seasonal desserts available. Some popular desserts such as anmitsu and mitsumame can be taken away. Enjoy one of these special desserts in a quiet cafe after having fun shopping at Takashimaya department store.

Matcha Cream Anmitsu
Matcha Cream Anmitsu / ¥951
Although there are various kinds of anmitsu, Tsukigase’s most popular one is their “Matcha Cream Anmitsu.” This dessert contains matcha green tea ice cream and red bean paste topped agar jelly, sliced banana, gyuhi mochi, made from rice flour and starch syrup, and has a wee cherry on top. Pour brown sugar syrup over this anmitsu to finish the dessert off. The mix of the not-too-sweet bean paste and brown sugar syrup together with the cool green tea ice cream is absolutely amazing.

Matcha and Sweets Set
Matcha and Sweets Set / ¥864
After eating, relax with a special matcha green tea and a small sweet. The matcha tea has just the right amount of bitterness. The matcha also comes with a mochi filled homemade fresh sweet red bean paste and a sugar candy that looks like a chestnut. Both sweets have mild flavors and go great with the matcha. *Sweets change seasonally
3Let's Try!
Ume zen
Ume zen / ¥972
You can also have meals at Tsukigase. The Ume zen set lunch consists of straw-bag-shaped red rice, zoni clear-soup and squash pickles. The soup is simple and light and doesn’t fill you up too much, highly recommended. Another lunch set, “Sakurazen” contains the same dishes as Ume zen plus red bean and mochi dumplings for dessert.
4Let's Try!
Abekawa Mochi
Abekawa Mochi / ¥850
This mochi dessert is also very popular at Tsukigase. The mochi is also made to order, so will always be melt-in-the mouth soft. The Kinako soybean flour and superfine sugar, which smell amazing, go incredible with the mochi and it’s hard to keep your hand away. The mochi begins to harden after a wee bit, so finish quickly!
