Ukishima Garden Kyoto

- 浮島ガーデン 京都 -
Ukishima Garden offers beautiful vegan shojin cuisine in downtown Kyoto
There are not many vegan restaurants in Kyoto offering you a fixed menu in a machiya-style townhouse atmosphere, but this is just what you get at Ukishima Garden Kyoto. The vegan cuisine of this atmospheric restaurant is, without doubt, unquestionably, one of the fanciest you can get in Kyoto. Their course menus may not be cheap, but they make up for that with both the taste and the great atmosphere you get to enjoy. The restaurant cooks its food in accordance with the ideals of Zen Buddhism, in the form of macrobiotic cuisine. So the food here is inspired by the ideals of ying and yang, and it’s very balanced.
Vegan Takakibi Lasagna
Vegan Takakibi Lasagna
This lasagna is made with healthy grains, and while it looks like it is topped with cheese, it’s actually not real cheese, but also made with grains. This lasagna actually contains sorghum, a kind of grain mainly cultivated in Africa and India, but which has a very nice taste, and which also makes this lasagna feel a bit heavier – a bit more like its cheesier counterpart. This lasagna is part of the ¥5,500 Megumi course. The course can also be had with sake or wine, ¥7,700 for three glasses and ¥9,200 for five glasses.

Wine pairing
For 2,500 yen, you get to have three glasses of wine with your dinner. You can also opt to five glasses for a few more yen too. I personally found the combination of sesame tofu and sparkling wine to be really refreshing one, and I would definitely like to have it again.

The restaurant is in a machiya townhouse, so take a moment to appreciate the Kyoto-likeness of it before you start enjoying your meal. As well as with the food, the setting may at first look very traditional, but once you take a proper look, you’ll notice that there are some modern touches.

The atmosphere, service, and food here are exceptional. I especially liked the lasagna I got to taste, as it was not only delicious, but the grains in it made it very filling. The restaurant is in a traditional machiya townhouse, meaning that you get to experience a very Kyoto-like night of dining out here. I especially liked the inner garden.
