Visionary lights of fire flies and tea ceremony in Shimogamo Shrine
In the beginning of June, “Hotarubi no chakai” (tea ceremony of fire flies) and “Tadasuno mori Noryo ichi” (summer evening party in cool-breeze) are held in Shimogamo Shrine. “Hotarubi no chakai” (tea ceremony of fire flies) has been held every year since 1991 by Tadasuno mori Foundation in order to revive the “Noryo chaseki” (summer evening tea party) that had been taken place in Mitarai River inside of Shimogamo Shrine in Meiji period (around 1868 - 1912). On the event day, about 600 fire flies caught in Tadasuno mori Forest are put into a big basket and released to Mitarai River in the evening. You may be amazed by the beautiful lights of fire flies while enjoying the tea ceremony (Noryo chaseki).

Beautiful lights of fire flies
Tadasuno mori Forest has been keeping the vegetation of ancient time even in the urban area. Therefore, Shimogamo Shrine is also popular in the image of deity’s forest which you will surely enjoy the beautiful green there especially in May and June. On the event day, about 600 fire flies caught in the forest will be released in the evening.

Junihitoe (twelve-layered ceremonial kimono) dressing and Traditional Japanese music performance
On the same day, dressing of Junihitoe (twelve-layered ceremonial kimono) is taken place in Shinfukuden Hall where special clothes are stored. Please also enjoy the Japanese traditional music performance in Shimogamo Shrine while enjoying the festival atmosphere and beautiful lights of fire flies!
