A huge turnout! The monthly bargain-hunt
The To-ji Kobo Market takes place at the To-ji temple—near Kintetsu railway Kyoto Line To-ji Station—on the 21st of every month. Although To-ji is most famous for its five-story pagoda, on the 21st of every month, around 1,000 textile and antique stalls, selling ceramics and crockery, and food stalls gather at the temple. Huge crowds of visitors also gather there as well. This market has been loved by the people of Kyoto for over 700 years. Feel free to come and get a good deal on some of your favorite things, or even just enjoy a wander around the market. You might just find the bargain you were looking for.
Antiques & Textiles
At the To-ji Kobo market you can find many expertly-made ceramics, tea cups, and vases. If you're a little lost about what to choose, we recommend talking to the stall owner, though please be aware that they may not understand English. Prices vary, so you may be able to pick something up for as little as ¥500.
A Mish-Mash of Products
In addition to footwear, chopsticks, and watches, you can find many other curious items for sale here, including toys and even old records from bygone Japanese idols. How about picking up a little memento?
Chat To Stall Owners!
Many of the people behind the stalls are also the people that made these products, so feel free to stop and give them your opinion or ask them about how it's made. Just be aware that many stall owners may have difficulty communicating in English.
Eat at an Outdoor Food Stall!
When you're tired of walking around, take a break and head to one of the many outdoor food stalls in the food court to grab some delicious food, like yakisoba or oden. You can also grab a refreshing beer, or other alcoholic beverage of your choice, at some stalls.
